Ziggy 10,904
I was just listening to The Fame again after being obviously more into Chromatica lately and it's crazy how much her voice has improved. It was never bad, but the maturity she's gotten since then. You can really hear it between those two albums since she uses similar techniques in both albums. Poker Face to Sour Candy or Babylon, for instance. The strong, forceful head b*tch dominatrix voice she uses is just leagues more colorful (hehe) on Chromatica despite the technique being similar to Poker Face. You can really hear the work she's put in to make her voice as great as it can be.
Leoj305 3,300
Her voice also isn’t as artificially enhanced in chromatica as it is in TF. If you hear her live performances you can see she has a harder more raspy chest voice vs the recordings in TF.
SpadesToStart 2,971
While her voice has definitely improved since the beginning of her career, I think TFM is a more accurate starting place to judge her voice from. During TF, her voice always had that nasal affect she was using to actively try and conceal her classical/musical theater/jazz roots.

I also think part of that is that she recorded TF over A LOT of time and was smoking in the later bits of it so her voice changed substantially. Plus, it wasn't like she was using great technique for touring at the time since it was still new to her. I think her chest voice in the live versions were more of that, though editing definitely took place as well
Luc 4,775
I'm just wondering, but is it possible for Gaga to go back to the more sweet, pop-y voice if she wants to? Or is this change more or less permanent?

The verses and bridge on Plastic Doll as well as 9/11 are the same vocal technique as a lot of The Fame (though obviously even more affected) where she puts a lot in her nasal passage. So it wouldn't be *identical*, but she can reach similar spots. I think it'll inevitably sound at least a little different, though, because her voice simply has gotten greater depth and vibrato to it over time (similar to how Janelle Monáe sounds a bit different now compared to her debut; both hers and Gagas voices were still young and a bit thin. This has changed as they've matured). But I think she definitely can. Some performances of Lovegame on the JWT showed her dipping back there in bits. Chromatica Island 8,517
I agree, her voice gets better with time, she also stopped smoking during Chromatica, so that helped a lot as well for her voice and health. I was surprised how she performed Telephone at the Super Bowl which made me realise she has full control and can go back to that pop sound if she wants to, then she went old nasal-ga with the VMA 911 performance too. I think even though she's older she could still go back to a similar sound if she wanted.
hELXIG 42,086
Her voice is a lot deeper from cigarettes too! She's always smoked a lot, but she was smoking up to 20 joints a day before ARTPOP, and was chain smoking all day and night before Chromatica, so there's no denying it's had an effect. Pack a day smokers definitely have different voices after 10+ years. Also I have an app on my phone and if you pitch her talking voice up slightly she sounds exactly like TF era Gaga! This depth has definitely made her voice darker and sexier though It just means she will never have that sweet, nasally sound exactly the same way as during TF I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
