@Economy our spring break is 2 weeks before every other provinces ; people got back from their trips and only 4 days laters they decided to shut down schools + mandatory isolement, so there was already damage done.

Currently Quebec is the 4-5th place in the world where they test most ; ofc our cases are going to be higher because of that.

According to Google and their satellites Quebecers are the BEST at physical distancing, more than any other province in canada and any US state, so this is encouraging.  https://www.google.com/covid19/mobility/

Oh cool good to know. Higher testing will obviously give higher numbers

I still wonder what the true number is. It's hard to control the curve without knowing the true numbers

Yesterday, Denmark, which has tougher measures and with half the population of Sweden had more new cases and more new deaths than Sweden, which puts into question if the lockdown is that effective. But if that's what people want, the politicians will deliver.

For me, looking at the numbers worldwide, I dont see the lockdowns as effective. It probably has more to do with how people interact in their countries, where the country is on the map, how the weather is now and how ready is their health system for this. Italy and Spain are on lockdown for a month now and I dont see much of a change in their reports.

Given up to a 2 week or more delay until reported cases between symptoms showing up, and testing results coming in I think it's a bit early to say how well or not the measures are working

Also the number of confirmed cases will naturally vary based on how early exactly the virus was first introduced to an area and start spreading as well as efficiency and rate of testing

Looking at a place having more cases than another one that has more lax lockdowns and jumping to the conclusion that it's because lockdowns don't work is still far to early to make that kind of assessment

There's too many variables and we need longer term data

I agree that we need longer term data. Unfortunately we wont know who did good and bad until after this will end. But u can see countries that were able to control it without lockdowns.

The data right now is actually unreliable, since most countries control the tests, but a virus that is everywhere on the globe shouldn't be fight like "small" viruses which are in one region. It is clear that this is here to stay. It's not like with SARS.

Isn't it South Korea that asked only for infected/potential cases to stay in quarantine while everybody else continued with their regular activities?

I mean it must be true the weekly Kpop music shows never went on hiatus

There's a daily update of the situation in quebec at 1PM here, with total confirmed cases, deaths, negatives and cases under investigation so that + more and more testing it giving us a better representation of the situation ! https://twitter.com/sante_qc

How come Sweden isn't scared? Do they trust their healthcare can handle it without problem?

No almost everyone here is criticizing the health organization but they don’t care and make up recommendations and rules as they want without others opinions

Here in Italy the epidemic has just started to slow down but it’s not the end, we have to be very careful.

Well I guess we will still have to see the exact turnout of this

The I think the PM of Sweden did have a valid point about sustainability. We can't just stay in lockdown for the next year and a half till a vaccine comes out

We may find eventually what most of the rest of the world especially developed world is doing will not be possible to sustain and may have to be more lax like Sweden who knows

One thing seems clear. The lockdowns are not gonna chock out the virus because it's too contagious. Even one person remaining infected will just start a new wave in no time so it's not like the lockdowns can end for very long if we wanna comit to the current route

I'm not sure governemnts even really have a long term plan for this. They are doing emergency economic measures for a few months but this is not gonna last just a few months :toofunny:

I think once things have become more manageable, other countries might follow the leads of Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan. Have people wear masks in public, quarantine those who are ill or who have come into direct contact with those who are ill, quarantine people arriving into the country for two weeks, etc., while slowly reopening some things. Probably still a ban on large gatherings for a while though, so no in-person concerts.

We literally don't know that yet. The spread didn't really take off globally until like a month ago how do we know whether or not countries are managing without lockdowns? :selena:

however I will also say that unless we want another downturn worse than the great depression simply staying on lockdowns until a vaccine comes out 1 to 1.5 years from now is not really an option and we need alternatives

if these countries that are trying a different more lax approach fail to keep death rate from surging, we need to come up with something

They might have to try to open up slowly with some restrictions and allow the virus to simply spread slower like your saying they did

Cuz again, what we are doing is an extreme measure to try to prevent a spike but it's not sustainable

Even a month closed will cause many small businesses to fail. We certainly can't survive a year like this
