Its not about "flattening the curve", its about protecting EVERYONE Nd you can't do that if you aren't on a lock down. Did we learn nothing from Italy, or Spain? Lock it down at the first few cases and it can't spread... then only a tiny minority get it and everyone else stays healthy Almost no expert agrees with u tho Most are saying the virus will still infect the majority of the population eventually. U cannot kill off the virus with shutdowns So it is about flattening the curve. That's literally what Countries and health experts keep saying U can argue about when is the right threshold to start the lockdowns but the goal (which is flattening the curve) is not really in question among health experts or most governemnts

Unfortunately no western countries were preemptively ready for this like they were. Hopefully we learn our lesson Yes, the memory of SARS taught them a lesson. Fortunately it wasnt as infectious so it made it easier to contain

StrawberryBlond 15,611
About time too. I was so frightened when this came on the news late last night. S**t just got real. This has never happened in our country's history. Our grandparents generation had the war. This is a different kind of war, where our government is telling us what we can do for our country, who'll be on the front lines and what the ones at home are expected to do. If I was still employed, I'd be working in a supermarket right now. On the one hand, it's in my nature to help people and I'd be honored to serve the public at this time, but on the other hand, the chances of me catching it and infecting my elderly parents would increase so much. Unbelievably, my careers advisor texted me with a job opportunity, even though the career's centre officially shut down yesterday (I know because I still went to my appointment). Thought the text would be telling me to wait for official confirmation when meetings will commence, but no, a job agency is looking for people to work warehouse and reception work, which I'm not even trained for! God almighty! I sent him a long message back detailing how it's really not feasible when I can't even drive, it being so far away and super early hours mean public transport wouldn't be practical and I'd have to rely on my elderly father to drive me otherwise and if anything happens to him, I'm screwed. And I may have to be the one getting food for my family as I'm the only one not in a risk group at home. I even got a text from the government as I was typing telling us to stay inside. I like to think I was texted about the job before the announcement came last night and my phone did its usual delay. But still. What is it with profit over people right now? Oh, and I started having a mild sore throat and cough last night. It hasn't worsened today, nor is either thing sore but it's not like me to have sore throats and coughs. My aunt's also been displaying symptoms for over a week now but we hope she's fine. My mum was also feeling under the weather recently. Please, Jesus, please watch over all of us. Girl my fiancé and I also had/have coughs! Just coughs though, no other symptoms. Mine has lasted about 10 days so far, but it never got very bad and seems to be improving. I just blamed it on allergies at first but I’ve never had a cough from allergies and I’ve never had a cough like this. It’s all very odd. I’ll never be able to get tested so it’s very disconcerting because I don’t want to accidentally give it to my parents.

Surely it's good that people are being offered that opportunity particularly if others have lost jobs... I know, but I think many companies aren't even thinking about hiring new people right now, especially if they're an industry that's been forced to close or their business has hit the wall. It would be just like the thing for me to be offered something and then immediately laid off. When shops started closing, ones that I'd applied for were among them. There's surprisingly no call for supermarket workers in my area (I'm trained for supermarkets) and I've had no call from my previous employment to help out. If they asked, I definitely could do that but considering that they have a 100% full workforce, have cut everyone's hours and only have a set amount of money to distribute among employees, I know for a fact that they have no room to employ new people, even if it's temporary. I think everyone should hold off on looking for jobs unless they live alone and are living paycheck to paycheck. I'm lucky my parents still provide for me and I'm part of a group that I'm sure the government would be advising to stay inside. The job search site has nothing within 5 miles of me that I've not already applied for. I don't even want the nearest one but felt under pressure to apply for it to keep my advisor happy. They're just looking to save themselves right now because it looks good on their record if I get a job on their watch. They can work from home but us poor souls have to put ourselves on the path of danger just to get them a gold star on their record? Not likely. 1 minute ago, uo111 said: Girl my fiancé and I also had/have coughs! Just coughs though, no other symptoms. Mum thinks I maybe caught this throat thing off her. My body might also be mimicking symptoms purely for the fact that I'm worried I have something. Love and prayers to anyone going through this period of hanging on tenterhooks.
