Didymus 34,380
For her it's probably the best thing to do, yes. Wouldn't work for other artists but at this point it's obvious that Katy can't sell albums anymore but people are still here for standalone songs. So it's logical. Still waiting for that Janis Joplin inspired folk album though, Katheryn I hope she's happy at least.
ryansamonster 1,762
This makes sense to me, it allows an artist a little more freedom to experiment instead of trying to tie the sounds and themes together for an album. Independent artists do this all the time. In Katy’s case though, definitely seems like they’re looking for her next hit.

ThisGuyTony 31,085
Promoting quick, little singles is probably more cost effective than an album. But if there's a lot of singles being released, where is the hype for new material?
StrawberryBlond 14,923
I feel this is a move from her label to slowly get her back into the public's hearts - individual singles occasionally to slowly introduce her back on the charts. But it looks like so far, its not working, which is odd as this is such a summery track, should be THE song of the summer and is such a current pop sound. To see it have a peak of #15 in the US, her biggest market, when her fans are desperate for her to succeed again, must be very hard for her to take. I honestly think this could be the beginning of the end for her, particularly if she takes much longer to put out a new album. Witness was too much of a flop to take this length of time away. You shouldn't be struggling to get a top 10 hit when you're a popstar under the age of 40...and she's been struggling ever since Prism to do that (minus Roar and DH, her other 3 singles failed to hit top ten and the only top ten hit she's had since DH is CTTR) and she was only 29 then. It's sad but there's so many artists who come onto the scene, are big for a few years and then fade out. We're kinda shocked and outraged by it in this day and age but it's nothing new. sipthistea 21,099
Since her new single didn't do well, she'll release more until one sticks. This is how the music industry works today.

Do you really think she'll fade out? I think she could rebuild her career around something much more honest. But I don't know if she'd do it. She's in such a comfort zone, and even there she's not having much success.

She's struggled for hits for the last five years. That doesn't bode well for a young popstar if you've reached that stage. Unlike Gaga, I don't think Katy's got it in her to reinvent herself for a new demographic - she's stuck with her young fans who have now outgrown her and can't get respect from the grown adult market, who view her as a singer for kids. She's stuck in a catch 22 and it explains her current chart situation. Despite her being 34, I have rarely met a Katy fan in their 30's and I think it's a bad sign when your fanbase doesn't reflect your age and skews younger. Artists like that tend to shoot to the top and then drop like a stone because young fanbases are so fickle. With men, there's a chance to come back as a more respectable, credible artist further down the line, but with women, there isn't much hope. I don't think Katy can adapt to new music trends either, so if her old style isn't working and a new style doesn't either, what hope does she have? Just because you're a main pop girl doesn't mean you'll be in that position forever, it's just the way of this industry. The average artist burns out after their first 3 albums and only a select few have decades-long careers. We just seem to think everyone is entitled to stay around these days when that's never been the way.

I love that Ariana Grande has been operating that way. albums are great but I also feel like the intensely orchestrated, every-step-planned album cycles that pop artists typically do is suffocating and burdensome. why not release a song whenever she feels like it? idk, i don't really see it as pining for a hit given she's already on a string of chart duds. she also completely reverted to 2011 pop with Never Really Over, anathema to today's charts, so if she's trying to get a hit, she's going about it all wrong lol Standalone singles take all the fun away from the excitement of a full on pop era. I hope Gaga doesn't hop on that trend (sans The Cure) because one of the best things of being a Gaga fan is the joy of a new incoming era. Plus I feel like releasing standalone singles that will be a part of an album or some kind of playlist or mixtape is only a tactic to get a #1 in the first week
