A Dutch teen decided to end her life through legal euthanasia after struggling with her mental health for years.

Noa Pothoven, 17, died last Sunday in her Netherlands home with the assistance of an end of life clinic, according to reports.

Euthanasia is legal in the country if performed under the strict rules of the Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide Act. The decision has to be approved by a doctor, and it has to be concluded that the patient’s suffering is unbearable and likely to continue.

Pothoven took to Instagram one day before her death to talk about her decision.

She had previously written an autobiography titled “Winning or Learning” in which she discussed her battles with mental illness after having been molested and raped as a child, according to reports. “I deliberated for quite a while whether or not I should share this, but decided to do it anyway,” she wrote. “Maybe this comes as a surprise to some, given my posts about hospitalization, but my plan has been there for a long time and is not impulsive.

"I will get straight to the point: within a maximum of 10 days I will die.”

She added that she’d been fighting for years and was now “drained,” and that she felt she had never been alive but was instead just “surviving.”

“I have quit eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it was decided to let me go because my suffering is unbearable,” Pothoven wrote. “Love is letting go, in this case.”

She also asked people to please not try to convince her otherwise.

The practice is highly controversial, but in 2017 in the Netherlands, 6,585 people ended their lives through euthanasia. The practice is legal in Belgium and Canada as well.

I mean, I could never do it, but if people say their lives are unbearable, I think there should be a safe and supervised way for them to end it if they choose.

I hope she found peace now. :kara:

Euthanasia is also accepted in my country belgium and nobody thinks its a big deal here. And I thought it was everywhere that way until I saw a american documentary about our "killer-doctors".

I don’t even know what to say. How could a doctor sign off on this? Shouldn’t they redirect her to a therapist and a psychologist, do something in order to take care of her mental health? How could they allow a teenager to go through this, a TEENAGER who goes through mood swings and is depressed? This poor girl... I don’t know how to feel about this.

Nope terrible, why would they even allow it for 17 yos when their brains are not yet fully developed? She could have easily live full happy life. Against this, not euthanasia overall but she's way too young to make these decisions and there a lot that can be done about depression nowadays.

which god damn doctor approved euthanasia for a 17 year old girl, which by the way is most likely going through the most emotional, troubling & hormone-filled era of her life? what in the ****ery is this. am i the only one horribly upset by this?

i'm all up for euthanasia for adults, but 17? i'm sorry but something just doesn't sit right with me about that.

There is no way I can agree with this. There could have been so much more help and support given in this case. People can recover from trauma.

I want to say this is fake cuz the laws of euthanasia are very strict, from what I recall you don't qualify if you struggle with mental illness or aren't terminally ill... can someone fact-check this article, my feet are cold so I'm going to lay in bed and warm them up...

But yeh, this looks like fear-mongering to try and turn people against the practice which I think has a place in the world... but that's just a guess going off of the quote...

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

At 17?! Outrageous and heart breaking. I hated being alive at 17 too but damn, your brain isn't even close to being done developing at 17 she could have had such a lovely life if she could have held on :(
