What was the last country song to hit #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 before 'Shallow'? I only know that 'Meant To Be,' 'You Belong With Me' and 'Need You Now' peaked at #2 .

Is Gaga so iconic that a pop artist brought country music back to the top instead of a country singer? :ally:

Wouldn't say Shallow is country, more folky/americana or rock and roll

Wikipedia says so with citation. Not everyone can edit the Shallow Wikipedia page.

I guess I'm not from America but I always thought of country as redneck kind of music about tractors and God and stuff

hm I wouldn't call it country. But the more folkish/alternative pop songs that went #1 that are as close to Shallow as possible in genre (but not really) are

2012: We Are Young - fun (meh this one is just alternative)
2007: Hey There Delilah - Plain White Teas (this one is labelled as folk pop on wikipedia)
2006: You're Beautiful - James Blunt (soft rock)
2005: Inside Your Heaven - Carrie Underwood (country pop) this was her American Idol song

To me the last huge country hit was "need you now" by lady antebellum but no sure it did hit the first place of BB100.

Shallow is a rock ballad imo.

Yeah Shallow is more pop rock, american folk but I can see how ppl think there is some Country influence because Country itself is HIGHLY inspired by those other genres too so they are sort of related I suppose.

To answer your question the last country song to be a real monster smash was prob Need You Now and Meant To Bottom but MTB isn't even really country other than the accent / country twang of the male singers lol and both songs only hit #2 so idk.

I never heard this song but is "Inside Your Heaven" by Carrie Underwood country? I never heard the song but it was #1 in like 2004 or 2005 I think and it is by a country artist but idk if Carrie was country when she released that song since she was on American Idol

I wouldn't categorize Shallow as country but there is some country influence it. I don't understand why people are so contrariated. :poot:
