House Democrats vote to reopen government, reject Trump’s demand for wall

On their first day in the majority, House Democrats passed a plan Thursday night to reopen the government without funding President Donald Trump’s promised border wall.

The largely party-line votes came after Trump made a surprise appearance at the White House briefing room pledging to keep up the fight for his signature campaign promise.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trump and Senate Republicans should “take yes for an answer” and approve the border bill, which was virtually identical to a plan the Senate adopted on a voice vote last month.

“We’re not doing a wall. Does anyone have any doubt that we’re not doing a wall?” Pelosi told reporters at a news conference Thursday night.

Not 100% familiar with american politics but does it mean there will be no wall at all or just that this specific plan to pay for the wall isn't accepted ? And can't open link from my country to know more...

It means now the Senate has to vote on it... which they won't because the Senate is controlled by Republicans.

The shutdown continues. So no wall in sight yet, regardless.

I don't want a wall in my country. This is not the answer. Some of the people closest to me are immigrants and they are so misunderstood.

Why would the Senate Republicans not? They'd get a lot of backlash for going against Trump.

The House version of the bill is what they'd be voting on. There is no funding for the wall in the House bill, thus no vote in the Senate.

Senate Republicans won't pass the bill to show unity as a party.

Some have iterated that some parts of the bill are acceptable and would pass a senate vote.

Also, they feel there is no reason to shut down segments of the gov. Over this one issue.

Ah. I thought you meant the Senate wouldn't pass a bill with Wall funding because you were talking about the outlook of a Wall in general. 

Can the Senate introduce a brand new bill and send it to the house? Can they send a revised proposal based on the house's back? I'm not sure of the political system in the US either but most bicameral legislatures allow both of those things.

The Senate could pass its own bill, but the wall funding issue would be irreconcilable between the two chambers, so it'd just stall. That's what happened last month to cause this shutdown, except it was the other way around. Senate bill had no wall, House did. Sen. McConnell (Republican who controls Senate agenda) has now said he won't bring up a bill Trump is unhappy with.

You're right lol I just mean 2020 is when the voting for the next election begins, that will determine how his term will turn out when he exits office in 2021. I just saw McConnell's statement. Just pathetic how the Republicans have no backbone, are backtracking, and once again saying "BUT the democrats!" to cover their own responsibility. They have a point about not wanting to move forward with a bill that is just gonna get veto'd but then it would be on Trump, not the Dems. The Senate didn't want the wall last month and now suddenly "Democrats need to get serious about border security "

The senate can try but in the senate you need 60 votes to pass a bill, the gop only has 53 votes in th senate. So it’d never get passed to the house without some Democrats.
