Applause is the one all over the place. A casual viewer would get none of the references and metaphors in the video, while Telephone has a strong plot and storyline.

a storyline and plot that was all over the place and chops the song up into pieces :poot:

it really isn't that hard to decode Applause lol music videos don't need storylines and plots to be good

the references in applause make sense though because it corresponds with the song itself. it simply works—especially if the video is for a song that contains lines such as "pop culture was in art now art is in pop culture in me". it is intentionally chaotic and basically a time capsule of influential events in pop culture. it simply doesn't work in telephone.

plus gaga is an artist who's videos usually come with hidden meanings and take multiple watches to decode, i don't see how a music video that causes people to research references is a bad thing  if anything, she's giving it replay value and to pander to lazy people who just think it's weird trash is a mistake

Telephone really isn't that deep, it's just a whole lotta fun and was a huge pop event but her videos are better when they leave people theorizing and connecting dots
