For the most part, ARTPOP had a more dated EDM sound and Gaga was a) over-exposed and b) the GP found her pretentious. The ARTPOP concept fed negatively into the 'pretentious' complaints the GP had about Gaga. The project was bound to fail. Prism, on the other hand, was not remotely a risk and catered to the GP.ย I do believe that had DWUW been promoted properly and had a highly-conceptual video not promoting rape, the song would've been a smash (Top 5 at least). Would it have helped album sales? Not sure. Applause was, by all means, a smash (Top 10 for how many weeks? Heavy radio rotation) and that certainly didn't lead to high first-week sales.ย I feel like a lot of people wanted to hate ARTPOP and chose not to give it a chance. The overly harsh reviews and label of ARTFLOP didn't help. I love the album, loved it from the get go and even I was a "closet" ARTPOP fan. It was not fashionable by any means to like it, which is part of why it's a great album. It was divisive, and honestly, I feel like Gaga is best when she's divisive and if any project HAD to be divisive, conceptually it should be ARTPOP.ย Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
