"I hate white people" might not be the best way to talk about what's going on, but stop for a second and ask you what led that person to say that. As long as they are factual, they help us understand the world from a sociological point of view. No one is saying judge an individual white person on what another white person did, but we are saying that white people as a societal force often have a negative impact.
