Lion Heart 15,041 Posted June 10, 2017 Share Posted June 10, 2017 Chokwe Antar Lumumba, 34—son of the late Jackson, Miss., Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and community activist Nubia Lumumba—is the new mayor-elect of Jackson, Miss., beating Republican challenger Jason Wells in a landslide victory. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Lumumba had 23,175 votes, or 93 percent. Republican Wells had 900 votes, or 4 percent. Jaclyn Mask had 572 votes, or 2 percent, and Kenneth Swarts 175 votes, or 1 percent. Lumumba will take office in July. “We have a lot of work to do,” Lumumba said at the King Edward Hotel as he acknowledged his win. “If you have the best ideas, that’s what we’re moving with.” Supporters shouted, “One City, One Aim, One Destiny!” as Lumumba declared victory. The incumbent mayor, Tony Yarber, is a Democrat. In fact, Jackson, Mississippi, has elected nothing but Democratic mayors for many decades: J. Kane Ditto - Democrat - 1989-1997 H. Johnson, Jr. - Democrat - 1997-2005 F. Melton - Democrat - 2005-2009 L. B. McLemore - Democrat - 2009 H. Johnson, Jr. - Democrat - 2009-2013 C. Lumumba - Democrat - 2013-2014 T. Yarber - Democrat - 2014- Common feature: all mayors of Jackson, Mississippi since 1989 have been black, which tells you something about the demographics of Jackson, Mississippi. Note that 7/10 Jacksonites are African-American, and that 8/10 African-Americans lean Democrat. So of course, there's absolutely nothing surprising here, but of course, people who know little of Jackson and who associate the state of Mississippi with Republican rednecks will think this is some kind of upheaval or 'turning point'.
