Has Gaga dropped her gimmicks?

She may be as shocking as she was before, but she can still grab people's attention, even from her name alone.

To be honest, I think it's more of a "what else can she do next?" thing than dropping the gimmicks. She definitely toned down her image mid-ARTPOP-C2C-Joanne, and switched to a more "normal" persona. But at the same time, I think when you've reached a point where you wore a wooden dress, teddy bear dress, meat dress, and even an egg and a hovercraft dress (Volantis), what else can you even do?

She is still ~crazy~ and theatrical, it's just more stripped back and streamlined now. I think it shows a sense of maturing, and it's more exciting when she does bring it out tbh.

I don't mean to be rude, to be honest, but in terms of "maturing" artistically, and being totally new and original and also shocking, TFM is her best era in terms of look. Hell, even BTW, which I totally love, still feels like a step backwards from TFM, in terms of style. And these looks above, while really nice, still feel like an attempt to recapture the beauty and creative brilliance of tFM. Perhaps the only truly original look from the new stuff is the one from Victoria's Secret show, which does look mature.

The rest are more like copy/paste from ARTPOP, TFM and BTW.

I don't see how this is trying to recapture TFM though? Things like huge heels, black leather, blonde hair, eye appliques and shoulder pads have been part of her aesthetic since the fame era. It doesn't read as a copy+paste to me, just more like a continuation/moving of the "GAGA" look into a more mature/streamlined space.

I also don't think she's trying to be "shocking" anymore, just a little avant garde. The only thing that was somewhat "shocking" in recent memory is the tentacle in her mouth at Coachella.

This I do not agree with. The mere fact that she can easily regurgitate the names of every single person involved in the creation of each of these "shocking" things from her costumes and videos to her performances proves that she was that personally invested in all of them. She definitely was at the head of everything she did in the "wild" years. I feel like the toning down of her image seems more forced instead.

I thought yes at first tbh but then we got the Coachella intro and I don't think the crazy was forced. It's a part of her for sure and she's just older now and I think she's just learning that less is more. Her craziness is what made me stan tho so I hope we do see more of it throughout her career.

Amen!!!! I should know!! I've been trying to cure it for 28 years . Lol my 2 best friends have met my biological parents and they just look at me like "now I know why you are the way that you are." Lol I was born into crazy haha

This. I feel like there was a period of one-upping herself (literally wearing taller heel-less heels every few days). She also in a sense had to use it as a crutch, she was "Gaga the gimmicky crazy performance artist." After both her Oscar performances, Tony Bennett, and I'd argue most notably the Super Bowl she can kind of do whatever she wants and that wide respect is pretty cemented. So she can still gag on an octopus at Coachella but she doesn't take an army to assemble a lewk every time she goes to Starbucks in Malibu.

I think its best for her to be able to deliver things that match the music she puts out rather than having to be try hard on shock values all the time. Like PI music video, it's simple but it works best for that song particularly.
