Antonio 27,769
So I thought it would be a cool idea for me as a Rihanna stan to share my personal opinions on each of her 8 studio albums, starting with her debut: Music Of The Sun REVIEW: Spoiler 1- Pon De Replay (10/10) One of the only 2 tracks on this album that will get a perfect 10 from me. For a debut effort, it's a brilliant song from all angles, it has a great rhythm, fun and sing-along to lyrics, and her voice really makes the song her own. Although the lyrics don't quite represent Rihanna at her excellence, they are great for a debut, it deserved to go #1 tbh 2- Here I Go Again (Feat. J Status) (7/10) I get that when you're starting off on a music career you'd want to collaborate with some relevant musicians to gain popularity, but who the hell is J Status . This song is really innocent, something Rihanna was - only at the early stages of her career, so it really doesn't have the trademark Rihanna sound, but it's a very cute love song nonetheless. 3- If It's Lovin' That You Want (4/10) This song is so cheesy, the lyrics are one big cliche, and there are no redeeming qualities in the melody. Not much to say to be honest, I have this on auto-skip. 4- You Don't Love Me (No, No, No) (Feat. Vybz Kartel) (8/10) Back at it again with the collaborators nobody knows I see. It's a very catchy tune, I love the way she wrote it in minor and major keys that flow together so well. The way she sings "No, no, no" can make a 6 year old orgasm. I didn't give it a higher score due to the lyrics, which are, again, not representative of what Rihanna is actually capable of. 5- That La, La, La (1/10) La La La has been used so much in contemporary music that quite frankly, I'm so over it. It just feels like the artist had no nerve to write actually intelligent lyrics and went on the trend hopper train. It's also very dull musically, so instead of even bothering to skip it every time it comes on shuffle I just permanently deleted it from my library. That's how bad it is... 6- The Last Time (6/10) Props to Rihanna for finally putting some great lyrics in this record. "It's the last time you're ever gonna kiss these lips / Or ever will deceive these eyes", I MEAN Although the lyrics are a highlight in the song and the album as a whole, musically, this song is flat, the Spanish guitar is a great addition to the song, but I feel like Rihanna could've done better with the tune. 7 - Willing To Wait (2/10) Meh, nothing outstanding, fades into the background of the album. This song feels like a failed attempt at impersonating Destiny's Child. 8 - Music Of The Sun (10/10) This song might just me my personal favorite on this album, the title track doesn't fail to impress with it's Spanish influences, the raw vocals mixed with the smooth, perfect production, and the brilliantly catchy chorus and verses. The guitar plays a major role on this track and gives it a chill, laid back vibe, and a dancy chorus is all the song needs to light up the party. 9- Let Me (4/10) I really don't get the production, at all. It ruins the song for me, the flutes that don't have anything to do with the song, the sort-of-90s-dubstep. Other than that, it's the first time we see Rihanna going in a sexual direction with her music - "Want me come and whisper in your ear all the things you love to hear / I wanna come play nice with you / Cuz if I get you alone I don't know what I might do". It has a cute hook too. 10- Rush (Feat. Kordinal Offishal) (6/10) Am I the only one that gets so irritated by these rappers who misspell their names on purpose??? It's not even cool, what's that even about? Rush is a very rhythmic song, great to dance to at a party, Rihanna's verses are a bliss and the chorus lacks energy but is catchy and fun nonetheless. 11- There's A Thug In My Life (Feat. J Status) (1/10) J Status hits up again... The production is just a mess, the Madonna-inspired synths don't go with the song at all, and there are zero redeeming qualities in the song musically. As of the lyrics well, see for yourself - "There's a thug in my life / How am I gonna tell my mama?" 12- Now I Know (8/10) The closing track of the opening album. And a song where Rihanna finally delivers raw emotion, with her stripped back vocals and minimal production, the lyrics are another highlight of the song and the album overall, it's a beautiful ballad, which could've been better with a better melody. OVERALL: 55/
