4/5.

Considering Lady Gaga's reputation for constant reinvention, this might just be her most radical style change yet. Not because it's packed with shock value or controversy, but more for the fact that it isn't. The vocals are raw, with very little studio trickery, the songwriting isn't bogged down by overthought concepts and the production is stripped back to let Gaga's keen ear for melody and chord progression thrive.

Simplicity is key to Joanne's success, giving emotion, compassion and heartache space to actually connect with the listener. The switch from shimmering, four-to-the-floor pop to more bluesy, country tones might be hard for some fans to digest, but there is still a sprinkling of electronica and a healthy dose of pop sensibility all the way through.

Joanne is clearly Gaga's most personal album, popping aside the synthetic personas for something more honest and, well, human. Mother Monster may be retired for now, but Lady Gaga's sheer musical brilliance still shines through.
