imogen2133 430
So when Gaga talked about Mayhem during interviews she framed it as being about a series of gothic dreams and about being a long wild night represented through each song, like here: "‘Garden of Eden’ is a song about the temptation of being in the club and all the bad decisions you’re seduced into making. It’s kind of like Level 3 after ‘Disease’ and ‘Abracadabra’ right before we get to ‘Perfect Celebrity’ on the album when the night starts to turn a little bit." I understand the individual meanings of the songs on the album but I don't see how the songs fit into this framing or as an overall arc from start to end. I think Disease and Abra make sense as being about inner turmoil and your inner voice trying to get to you and then Abra being about getting through that and being resilient and Gaga being tested by the Mistress but I don't see how GOE continues that or how they all fit into the gothic dreams/long night party framing like I said. Also the love songs after GOE like LoveDrug, The Beast, Vanish Into You and DWAS seem more like they talk about a deep, dedicated and long term relationship where as GOE and HBDYWM seem more youthful and surface level which further complicates this framing. I also don't see how PC continues the narrative or idea of GOE either. If someone who understands better could explain that would be great Edited June 3 by imogen2133
Ultimecia 6,725
This again? You know how I feel about MAYHEM, and you know I take every opportunity to criticize this album and its lack of substance, but I think it's time to move on. Time. It will not wait, no matter how hard you hold on... 1

Controversiaga 15,276
I don’t think there’s a meaning the album is just a compilation of songs she’s created over the last however many years and they decided to call it mayhem since there is no cohesion amongst these songs Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga” 3
AVeryGagaHolyDick 31,336
There’s no meaning, they just recorded many songs and chose to keep the ones they liked the most 2

Nah, just observing that you tend to say that any time anyone has a discussion deeper than surface level about music/performance lol Edited June 3 by Ladle Ghoulash We have forgotten our public MANNERS

You’re talking about 1 (one) instance that you didn’t like. You’re free to interpret a performance any way you’d like. I personally believe it wasn’t intentionally written in the complex way you interpreted it, and I said so in a respectful way. If anything, my thoughts on the album’s lack of substance line up with my belief that the tour also did not have this long thought-out plot. This doesn’t even make sense. The album isn't that deep.
steven 6,518
Mayhem has no meaning, it's just a bunch of songs tied together. She probably came up with this narrative when promoting the album.
