This put things into a new perspective for me. I was most concerned about Gaga's performance being panned, but now I think the writing and production may be what we should be concerned about. I think the fact that it is a remake means that the writer might not be super important, but I still want good dialogue, and Bradley Cooper's directorial debut has a lot of pressure on it. Time well tell, but I think that it at least won't flop commercially.

Based on what you've said, I'm more concerned about the screenwriting than anything else. Some of the producers don't seem too awful (Gerber and Peters, in particular, seem credible). Also, I'm hoping Cooper would have gained enough skills through his career to actually be a decent director.

I just hope this doesn't end up, like, like Glitter.

Very sound logic. Gaga/Cooper aside, I'm rather worried about the creative team they've pulled together.

However, people like Akiva Goldsman and James Gunn are two examples of screenwriters who wrote some of the most disastrous scripts in recent memory, but went on to deliver critically and commercial successful films.

I dont think she would accpet it if the script or the concept wasn't good. But it'll flop no matter. I wouldnt see it, besides the fact that Gaga's on it. But the music can save it.

I am much more interested in Barbras movie though. Gypsy, now that's the role i'm starving to watch.

These sorts of movies seem to do badly more often than not. I'm a film geek but I just don't have much interest in this project at the moment. I feel like even if it's bad though, Gaga's voice and music will be enough to make it worth

Agreed. I hope this thread didn't make it seem like I WANT this movie to be bad...I want to be snatched bald just as much as the next gay 

A part of me was disappointed when I found out she was in ASIB rather than Gypsy  Oh well

No, not all. And it's good to be confident but not expect her to always nail it, sometimes its not just up to gaga.

Gypsy will happen sis, it has to. But 2 musicals after one another...nahh, dont know

Before I type another word I just want you all to know that I'm not worried about Gaga's delivery in this movie. She is going to give us the performance of her life (so far ). In fact, I will be reinforcing my scalp with titanium plates before I enter the movie theatre.

It's the other people working on this movie that I'm worried about. Let me break it down for you.

The Director: Daddy I mean Bradley Cooper will be directing this movie (and starring in it). He has never directed a movie before

Yes, directorial debuts can go well ("American Beauty", "Reservoir Dogs", "The Maltese Falcon", and "Citizen Kane" -- the 'greatest movie of all time' -- were all made by first-time directors). I'm not totally counting him out. 

Also recall that 5 out of his 6 recent movies received mixed reviews and/or flopped. Moving on 

The Screenwriter: A man named Will Fetters will be writing the screenplay for this movie (in collaboration with Bradley Cooper). He's written the scripts for three films and one obscure TV movie. Let's take a look at the films:

 "Remember Me" - the 2010 romantic drama starring Robert Pattinson. The movie received 27% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fetters' script was criticized for being "overly maudlin" and "thunderously overwritten."

 "The Lucky One" - the 2012 romantic drama starring Zac Efron. The movie received 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. It was criticized for being "mawkish", "saccharine", and "schmaltzy" (now would be a great time to crack open that dictionary )

 "The Best of Me" - the 2014 romantic drama that received a whopping 8% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film was dragged for having "risible [laughable, absurd] dialogue". 

"A Star is Born" is going to be his fourth film  Remember that a script can make or break a movie.

The Producers:

(Q: What do movie producers do? A: According to Wikipedia, they "plan and coordinate various aspects of film production, such as selecting the script, coordinating writing, directing and editing, and arranging financing.")

This movie will be produced by four men (according to Deadline.com): Bill Gerber, Jon Peters, Todd Phillips, and Basil Iwanyk (who will be exec producer).

Let's take a look at each of them:

Bill Gerber: His only legitimate hit movie seems to be Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino." The others - "Dukes of Hazzard", "Grudge Match", "Beerfest", "What A Girl Wants" - have an average Rotten Tomatoes score of like, 20%.

Jon Peters: He produced the 1976 ASIB remake with Barbra Streisand (which flopped critically). He also produced "Gorillas in the Mist" and the 1989 "Batman" movie, which gives me some hope.

Todd Phillips: He produced all the "Hangover" movies and "Borat" 

Basil Iwanyk: His most credible hits are "Sicario" and "The Town" (that movie with the creepy nun masks ). He has also produced such critical flops as "Gods of Egypt", "Seventh Son", and "Clash of the Titans".

...

Here's what I think is going to happen:

- The movie will receive mixed reviews. Critics will drag the script and possibly the directing, but Gaga and her performance/soundtrack will be a highlight.

- The movie probably won't flop at the box office (at least I hope it doesn't). Little Flopsters + soccer moms and their closeted husbands itching for a Bradley Cooper fix + senior citizens who bought C2C and stan "A Star Is Born" in every incarnation = box office success? 

- Gaga will get nominated for "Best Original Song" at the Oscars. The Academy will feel bad about what happened this year and give the award to her, which is all I really care about in the end. (Yes, critical flops can and do get nominated for Oscars all the time. "Fifty Shades of Grey" received a Best Song nomination.)

technically, he is. however, don't forget that actors often use their extensive on-set experience to try out directing. one of the hollywood reporter roundtables touches on the subject, i recommend looking it up. being on set means that you have first-hand experience and are able to learn the tricks of another profession; in this case, actors transforming into directors. i'm not that well informed in terms of movies, but i can tell you that there are quite a lot of tv show actors that begin by simply contributing to directing an episode, then, if they feel comfortable enough, move on and direct entire episodes by themselves. if they feel the need to tell a bigger narrative, they often end up directing entire movies. off the top of my head, kerry washington comes to mind. have faith in cooper!
