But I think it is a very odd reference cause the BM performance isn't that iconic.

The headpiece (which was a canvas) showed how she was a canvas which is why the paint was smeared on her face later in the performance. I guess they needed something from the BTW era that would fit with the blank canvas theme, and the BM outfit was the best they had for that. They probably wanted to incorporate something more 'iconic' but it didn't logistically fit in, especially when they only had a short amount of time to create the performance after MTV scrapped the original one.
