US Charts Discussion

Yeah, but that doesn't explain its underperformance WW in countries where most people don't even speak English (Europe, East-Asia compared to her other singles, Latin America).

I am not sure what you mean. This was my response to another poster who specifically spoke of the US, I believe.

I had already written my opinion of the song. I think the pre-chorus is the best part, while the chorus is a bit messed up in terms of mixing/production and her vocals aren't as clear as they could be. The first time I heard it I couldn't even figure out what she was saying in it, it was very muddy.

The rest of the world cares more about melodies than the US, and the vocals. If you have a killer melody you can have pretty subpar lyrics and get away with it in the rest of the world. The Applause melodic part is not strong in the verse and, like I said, the chorus doesn't give you the release the pre-chorus sets it up for.

Of course it's all relative.

My hunch is that singing about/asking for applause is not the same as asking for love - and it doesn't turn on the same emotional connections whatsoever, so at that point the song is basically just riding on its good points as a song only, not an emotional construct - hence limited success. I did say it was a good pop song. Jimmy picked it for a reason. That said, when it came out, I was concerned because to me, if this was the strongest lead single.... it was not a good sign.

Are people really having meltdown for a negative radio update on December 23rd ?

Only 4 songs had positive updates in the entire top 20.

Hopefully they won't rush it. If you have contacts and can have an impact, tell them to release ARTPOP, Aura/Venus, Gypsy and GUY as singles first  these songs deserve it so much.

Ugh as long as Gaga doesn't go all commercial with Volume II and doesn't release it next year. I want a 2015 release with risky songs only, to make up for the 'lack of art' on ARTPOP Volume I.

Hahaha, darling, I certainly can't tell anyone anything.

Let's put this straight: I am one degree separated from the people who work on the project. Doesn't mean I have any influence, though I may be privy to some fresh rumors now and then:)

My take (without any real info) is that they may go for Gypsy next and try to ride the wave of the 'new not overproduced' music that seems to be taking over.

The music industry (majors), alas, know mostly one thing: identifying the CURRENT big thing and then going all out to replicate it.

Unfortunately, most of the time the current big thing is already something that is on its way out or will be next year.

They often move slow, too, in terms of releases and things, because it's a big machine, and by the time they get on the wagon, the next big thing is already here.

My feeling is that Lorde's success, even if it's a fluke, is causing them to reconsider DJWS's involvement and there's some reshuffling going on as far as producers go. Perhaps there are some intentions to release the 2nd batch of songs with more stripped down production.

It was poorly executed in UK, but had plenty of good promo in US. And a video without banners wouldn't have made much difference. And it's solid top 10 in Canada.

That's why I said yesterday they should release Dope as 4th single because it's a song you can puff up a bit with synths like on the album but still is beautiful and strong stripped down to just the piano and her.

the same song again   Stop saying that, the banners help the video only the first few days anyway :X  A song without a video is like using only half of the song's potential   Music video gets played on TV and even if It has 20M views If It's a good video It can still affect buyers ...  People are sharing it on social networks .. There are youtubers that make parodies ...  Applause without the video would've been dead by September ..

Weird that Gaga is a dance pop artist, yet the majority here (Europeans during the day anyway) love R&B and ballads and Beyonce and can't understand why good pop song like Dark Horse, Burn, and Timber are smashing.
