Stefani 25
Britney Spears had something different going for her though, she was a generational icon because of her starting as one of those "Disney" stars. It's almost like Miley Cyrus, but more captivating and fresh. Lady Gaga is a huge break-out pop star, but I don't get the feeling that a generation is growing up and watching her exclusively like my entire generation seemed to be doing with Britney Spears. Lady Gaga is more of watched because she has to be watched, she's always doing something "crazy." I'm not discrediting Gaga. She's a cultural icon in her own right, and has had a huge impact while becoming the most famous person in quite awhile, but it's not really the same I feel. (I'm a former Britney stan, but I promise I'm level headed.) so why doesnt gaga get airplay? because its gaga?
Americano 31,061
Something important to remember is that this is when TRL was big. People saw music videos on TV so her exposure was much greater. VERY true! I didn't even think of that. Music video exposure was much bigger. Also, albums were more important. Much more important than now. And boy could Britney pull albums so why doesnt gaga get airplay? because its gaga? I honestly couldn't tell you. You & I + TEOG got decent airplay, so I don't think there's anything personal. Radio programmers listen to feedback from people on their stations, and maybe Applause isn't being requested. Americano 31,061
Lady Gaga's manager said "pop singers live and die on Top 40" so if Applause begins to slow down, don't expect it to just sit and simmer for months lol. Interscope will act
craig 680
There was something weird going on with Britney and radio though, as if they legit had a personal vendetta against her. There's more to it I know, but that wasn't just her releasing a bunch of flop singles.. It was sketchy. I heard Clear Channel was mad they had Pepsi (I think) sponsor a tour instead of them. 2004 was also the year only black people topped the Hot 100, so hip-hop and R&B were dominating radio. They stopped play Madonna and Kylie in that period too. Britney was also seen as kid's stuff by people your age then. Same reason Miley struggles on Pop and Hot AC now. Ty3009 232
The music industry has been in such flux since Britney started that her and Gaga's careers or perceived influence can hardly be compared at all.

Unless radio situation changes in next few days, I don't think we'll get through September without another single. It's doing great on iTunes so far, but it can't hold there on her name alone for that long. Radio needs to start backing it again. We'll see as the next days come and go. Bad 32
I'll ask on ATRL about Britney's radio drama during the 2000-2004. This is a former BS fansite, they should know. It had to do with Clear Channel wanting to sponsor her Dream Within a Dream tour. Britney was a Pepsi spokesperson at the time so her management chose Pepsi to sponsor the tour over Clear Channel. That's basically why they blacklisted her for that entire era.

Z100/KIIS FM are Radio must get their **** together... I still don't know why they dropped MTN so quickly. Or maybe Applause is just not doing the justice for new Gaga music, I still can't at the fact Applause barely made the album and it was the lead single... Why is she holding back the Zedd/Madeon super smashes? Maybe she'll pull out a P!nk kinda slayage and she'll get that WW impact with her second/third single?
