Americano 31,061
Why can't Gaga and Katy both do well on radio? And what if Gaga ends up getting the bigger radio hit, which is definitely a possibility? I just don't see Gaga's sound being as friendly as Katy's. She's gonna take a bigger risk

Cherry 17
Interscope wouldn't release a lead single that isn't a hit. Gaga is more artistically daring than some of her contemporaries, but it's not like she's going to release an anti-radio, non-mainstream song, especially for single #1.Gaga and Katy are about even on top 40, Katy is bigger on adult top 40/adult contemporary but Gaga has increased her appeal at both formats with "TEOG"/"Y&I", and Gaga could get more rhythmic support if her song is more dance-leaning than Katy's. It's anyone's game.
Bad 32
It's unlikely that Gaga will get a bigger radio hit than Katy. Even Bad Romance didn't top any of the TD singles in terms of airplay. I'm sure Katy will be following the usual Dr Luke radio pandering sound.
Arturo 40,746
At least Gaga described Applause as fun. I think that's all what people care about. People don't know the dark truth behind Paparazzi (even after watching the video) and the GP still embraced it.

And it's extremely likely that it will take away a lot of airplay/spins/audience from Gaga's single.
Cherry 17
It's unlikely that Gaga will get a bigger radio hit than Katy. Even Bad Romance didn't top any of the TD singles in terms of airplay. I'm sure Katy will be following the usual Dr Luke radio pandering sound. But you can't compare 2009 audience peaks to 2011/2012 audience peaks, pop radio has grown substantially since then.Gaga has a high chance of starting stronger than Katy since her single will carry more event status, and if Gaga's single sells more than Katy's then programmers are obviously going to favor her.And in case you haven't noticed, the "Dr. Luke radio pandering sound" hasn't exactly been winning lately. But still - Katy is the Queen of Radio atm. Gaga's major support will have to come from sales and streaming.

Gaga's major support will have to come from sales and streaming. But radio doesn't just pick favorites; programmers weigh a lot of factors to determine which songs get higher rotation. If Gaga's video got better streaming than Katy's, and she consistently ranked higher than Katy on iTunes, and listeners called in for Gaga more, and Gaga did better on Ratethemusic surveys, they wouldn't play Katy more because they'd lose their audience that way.Regardless, Gaga's single is going to be one of the most played on radio when it peaks, so it doesn't really matter if Katy reaches a slightly bigger audience.
