Antoni 5,332
MY SONG-BY-SONG REVIEW (based on second listen): 1. Heart Attack: 5/5. I love the song. It's exactly what HR was looking for when they hired writers to make music that the younger audience and the GP could love. 2. Made In The USA: 4/5. Good summer song. Very generic. But the idea is very cute. 3. Without The Love: 5/5. This chorus is TO DIE FOR, and the verses are pretty good, too. This is going to end up being one of my faves on the album. 4. Neon Lights: 3/5. The second verse is the same as the first verse, and that's just too Rihanna for me to handle. I like the song, but I'll get bored of it quickly. The chorus instrumental is too reminiscent of Starships / Pound The Alarm. I expect most of J.Lo's new album to sound like this song. 5. Two Pieces: 4/5 Personally, I hate that the song compares Demi and the guy to children needing friends. I love the chorus, but the verses can suck my d*ck. The bridge is also amazing. The chorus and the bridge make up for the verses. 6. Nightingale: 4.5/5 This is such a beautiful song. It's very mature sounding, and her voice is perfect for the notes and style. "I never see the forest for the trees" is perfect. I applaud the songwriter, as well as Hollywood Records for using the song. However, the song won't be remembered two albums from now. Maybe even one album from now. 7. In Case: 5/5 Perfect song. Also a mature song compared to some of the other songs on the album. I got a huge cold chill during my first listen. 8. Really Don't Care: 4/5 Currently my favorite song on the album. It follows In Case perfectly. With "In Case," Demi is holding onto hope that the guy is coming back for her. "Really Don't Care" is about being done with him. The song will smash on radio. However, I cannot stand Cher Lloyd's part. The song works so well with just Demi. When Cher Lloyd comes in, the party-feel disappears. I feel distracted listening to her part. As soon as a fan makes a solo version, I'm downloading it. 9. Fire Starter: 3/5 What even is this song? The idea is good. The lyrics are not. With a different chorus, I might really like this song. However, "I'm a badass jumping off a moving train" is fantastic. I do believe this song will grow on me. 10. Something That We're Not: 5/5 In "Fire Starter," Demi is a badass. In this song, she admits to hooking up. I love that she's not being forced to act completely innocent. The transition from the first verse into the chorus is fantastic. The lyrics are very catchy. Before the last chorus, Demi says "Not gonna happen dude." Doesn't sing it. Says it. It's very P!nk or Ke$ha, and I love it. This would probably be a successful single, even though it doesn't have the same generic style as most of the songs on the radio nowadays. 11. Never Been Hurt: 4/5 The build-up to the chorus is great. I'm not sure the song needs to start as quiet as it does, though. The song is very motivational. I've seen others compare it to "Unbroken" from her previous album of the same title, and I agree that the lyrics are very similar during the chorus, but the style of this song works better and is more enjoyable. My only complaint about Never Been Hurt is the vocal runs she does when she sings the word "hurt." It sounds like vocal dub-step. I think it's unique and cool that she can do it, but it's a bit distracting and makes me think of a turkey gobble. 12. Shouldn't Come Back: 3/5 The song is nice, but compared to the other ballads (Nightingale, In Case, and Warrior), it sounds like a filler. It's very early-Taylor Swift-sounding. "Sorry I'm not sorry for the times I don't reply" is too tacky of lyrics to be spaced out in the verses the way it is. The song won't be remembered. But it will definitely grow on me. 13. Warrior: 3/5 I like the idea. I like the song. But it needs at least one more instrument added as the song progresses. There is no build-up whatsoever. It also would've worked much better as an up-beat motivational song like Kelly Clarkson's "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)." The lyrics are great, but the composition doesn't deserve five stars. I do like albums that end with a ballad, but "Shouldn't Come Back" should have come earlier in the album, around "In Case." Two ballads as the last two tracks is one too many. ALBUM OVERALL: B- Hollywood Records wanted to try and make Demi's image more grown up to get a larger young adult and general public audience. I see the direction they went, and they chose the wrong direction. Too make her more grown up, they needed an album with as many genre differences as Unbroken had. Instead, we have radio-friendly and ballads. That's it. Replace the ballads with raps about strippers and money and beating hoes, and it might as well be a Nicki Minaj album. The music also doesn't feel as personal as most of the songs on Unbroken. It's clear Demi picked songs she liked and that were fun, but I think the label didn't let her pick many songs that she'd prefer singing. 'Demi' is to 2013 what Miley's 'Can't Be Tamed' was to 2010: an album that fits the year, has good songs, but isn't a defining collection of music.
