Every powerful technology in history has had an off-switch. AI companies are racing to build systems that might not. Nuclear plants have shutdown protocols. Airplanes have manual overrides. Even your smoke detector has a test button. But some of the most powerful AI systems being built right now are explicitly designed to resist being stopped, to improve themselves without human sign-off, and to operate faster than any human can review. It's a basic engineering standard we already apply to everything else that can harm us. Nobody, not even tech billionaires, should get to skip safety measures just because they're in a hurry to win a race. But right now, no one is stopping them. Our best chance to protect what makes us human is to unite behind a massive public campaign calling on lawmakers and decision-makers for a future where:

Humans remain in control of the decisions that shape our lives; Human creativity, dignity, and work are protected; Powerful AI companies are held accountable; and Technology serves people, rather than replacing them.

With one million signatures, we'll have a powerful public mandate that we will deliver to key decision makers — lawmakers, government regulators, and tech executives. The more people who sign, the harder it becomes for a few billionaires to decide humanity’s future without us.

A remarkably broad coalition rejects this path, united by a simple conviction: artificial intelligence should serve humanity, not the reverse. There is a better path, where trustworthy and controllable AI tools amplify rather than diminish human potential, empower people, enhance human dignity, protect individual liberty, strengthen families and communities, preserve self-governance and help create unprecedented health and prosperity. This path demands that those who wield technological power be accountable to human values and needs, in support of human flourishing.
