Which is blatantly clear on this album with the exception of the blatant "label wanted this" track.

Like her saying that goes against you saying she picked the most commercial track for chart purposes.

I mean, Madonna and Stuart both said she was the one who approached Sabrina to work together because she’s been a vocal admirer of her for a long time. They had been interacting on Instagram for ages. Madonna is not dumb. Using “Bring Your Love” as an entry point to a much more sprawling record is literally the sort of choices she’s built her entire career on. In fact, it’s the very same foundation that the original Confessions was built on; she front loaded that album with singles as a way to get the listener to stay for songs that have deeper meaning.

Gurl, she's quite literally a legacy act. If you look up a definition it says

"In music, a legacy act is an artist or band that has been established for many years and whose reputation is based primarily on a significant body of past work rather than current commercial success." (ChatGPT). It's what you make the term out to be that triggers you, it feels. You wanna understand it negatively, so you do.:

It’s more about her still functioning as a mainstream artist. “Legacy act” isn’t so much a dig than it is a certain way older artists start to act, and it just doesn’t apply to Madonna. “legacy act” is Janet touring Rhythm Nation for the past decade, it’s Kylie and Cher releasing Christmas and cover albums, over reliance on nostalgia. Even Madonna’s greatest hits tour and her doing “Confessions II” warps audience expectations because they are not approached with the goal of crowd pleasing.

on the record, now that it's out in proper quality I enjoy it a more

This still doesn’t mean anything. Ultimately it’s about context. Yes, Madonna is established and iconic, but the fact remains that she’s actively refused to participate as a “legacy” artist. I have no problem with the term. I just don’t think it’s applicable to her.

I think Bring Your Love was the right pick for lead single but sadly not even Sabrina could've saved it. Madonna has been jumping on the collabs bandwagon with Timberlake, Maluma, Anitta, Nicki etc obviously for a hit and it's understandable. Sabrina had been getting a good streak of successful singles that should've pushed the song out there. Still, I like what they did with the short film and hope at least Danceteria picks up a bit. The album is great, her best since Confessions 1.

Front loading implies quality.

Smart implies quality.

Not as was the reality - a damp squib fans and non fans moved on from pretty quick.

BYL is the worst song on this record. Fans & non fans critiqued it on release, and now the album is in front of us its even more obvious.

I'm also looking at the credits and it's interesting that Watt and Cirkut are on LES Girl along with Danceteria, Arca on I Feel So Free and The Test, and Mirwais (Madame X / American Life) is back on Betrayal.

You seem more preoccupied about what everyone else thought. Fine enough if you don't like the track, but it still doesn't change that it was the best song to lead with. Much like when Beyonce released "Break My Soul" as the lead for Renaissance. Far from the best song on the album, but it was the perfect entry point. It's like saying "Future Lovers" should have been released instead of "Hung Up".

Good for the Soul is an ultimate highlight. :flutter:

Ray of Light-esque even, it reminds me of Sky Fits Heaven!

I’m not totally sure she does, though. I think she has a lasting legacy that makes her a viable touring force, but I genuinely think her new material only generates interest within her fanbase and broader target demographic (gay people, pop fans more broadly). IMO, she inhabits a weird niche of being both a living legend and one of the biggest pop stars in history while also being something of a cult figure in the contemporary pop landscape.
