I saw it on here, on madonna sites and general pop sites - BYL made people lower their expectations/lose hype for the album. 

OR maybe she did it on purpose :ladyhaha:  Idk when I saw even more features I was like is this going down the MX/RH path?! thankfully it did not!

But personally, knowing that the early rumours were that One Step Away was the planned lead.... (Which I also don't agree with lol but I can see it fitting in with picking I Feel so Free) 

I think BYL was a label decision. And Madonna didn't care because she wasn't planning a traditional roll out

Referring to her as a legacy act just proves you have a misunderstanding of Madonna as an artist. This woman is still in conversations with artists over half her age, still aiming for commercial success rather than resting on her laurels. She is not Cher or Barbra Streisand. “Bring Your Love” and working with Sabrina got eyes on the album. It did its job more than any other song would have.

Eh, she’s basically a legacy act/living legend whose marketing is aimed primarily at her core audience, and I think BYL‘s chart performance basically demonstrates that. It just means her appeal is more of a cult phenomenon than it was at the peak of her popularity, which isn’t a dig at the quality of her art, it’s just pretty obviously and demonstrably true.

Bowie was still incredibly prolific, innovative, influential, and experimental toward the end of his career, and that didn’t change the fact that his audience was much more niche than it had been in the ‘70s. Nor did it diminish the quality of the work he was putting out during that period. It’s simply a fact about the trajectory of his career, and I think the same is true of Madonna. Not a dig, just a fact.

It pissed off her primary fan base and in wider pop circles made people less excited for her big "comeback" era at a crucial moment. 

And I understand Madonna perfectly well, I've seen her live multiple times and I've been one of her biggest defenders on here in recent years when a lot of people saw her as a washed up has-been clinging onto past glory with nothing more to offer. 

And if we want to talk about misunderstandings - you say they were right to pick the most commerical track because dance music doesn't chart. 
1) Madonna's one of the most decorated dance music acts, choosing to shy away from dance music to promote a dance album requires misunderstanding Madonna's entire appeal. 
2) In the UK, one of her most supportive markets in the 21st century, 25% of the Top 40 chart is dance music. It's closer to 50% when you include pop-dance and not just straight up dance music like the Chemical Brothers. 
3)She is a legacy act. Look at her streaming numbers, she excels in legacy media.

Almost nothing she does gestures to being a legacy act. Certainly not in a traditional sense. Madonna herself also just said in Interview that she really doesn’t care what her audience wants. She’s more interested in keeping herself interested.

It’s more about her still functioning as a mainstream artist. “Legacy act” isn’t so much a dig than it is a certain way older artists start to act, and it just doesn’t apply to Madonna. “legacy act” is Janet touring Rhythm Nation for the past decade, it’s Kylie and Cher releasing Christmas and cover albums, No Doubt in Las Vegas, over reliance on nostalgia. Even Madonna’s greatest hits tour and her doing “Confessions II” warps audience expectations because they are not approached with the goal of crowd pleasing. Bowie is Madonna’s closest analogue, but even he wasn’t a mainstream fixture like she has remained.

Which is blatantly clear on this album with the exception of the blatant "label wanted this" track.

Like her saying that goes against you saying she picked the most commercial track for chart purposes.
