The director said there won't be any characters from the game and that it's an original story with original characters, but it takes place during the Raccoon City incident, not in 1998, but in the present day. Call me a RE purist but I'm skeptical about Cregger setting the Raccoon City outbreak in Winter and it looks closer to modern day. That will have to grow on me. When the project was announced, I felt a bit conflicted, seeing as though I enjoy the RE games and dislike Cregger's previous movies. Nonetheless, my mind remains unclouded by bias, and I hope this movie succeeds. Having seen the trailer a couple of days ago, I do have to echo what some of the fans of the franchise have been saying online: This doesn't really seem like an RE film. And before people say that RE7 also felt like a departure from the franchise, and was well received, I have different issues with this project. I welcome the idea of introducing new characters and tyrants, as well as new places and maybe even strains of viruses. I have no problem with that element of this project, because it will make the plot unpredictable and suspenseful. What I do have a problem with is that I have seen most of the tropes depicted in the trailer, and it looks like a decent zombie film that was made in the early 2000s. None of this feels exciting. If you showed me this trailer, I would have no idea it was for a RE film. What makes this situation kind of weird is that even though I disliked Weapons, it would make sense to utilize some of its elements here. The multiple POVs featured in Weapons would have made so much sense here. Imagine the movie featured 3 different characters, all with different backgrounds and levels of expertise. We follow their stories through all the chaos in Raccoon City and see how their decisions impact each other's destinies.
