FfFfFfFF 56,822
A total icon and a queen! I admire for taking it upon herself to speak for the most vulnerable beings. She used her fame to make a difference and she deserves the world and heaven for that.
FfFfFfFF 56,822
For those unfamiliar, she was pretty involved in animal welfare internationally and in Romania. She rightfully criticized the government's treatment of stray dogs and tried to advocate better solutions, even met with former Romanian presidents Traian Băsescu and Ion Iliescu. She signed a protocol for the sterilization of dogs in the country and donated large sums of money to this end. These are my earliest memories of her. Cavadour 2,545
A controversial figure for sure. Once a big star, a very sexy woman and influential feminist figure. A sturdy, courageous personality and defender of animal rights. Her extreme choices and outspoken nature did not win her many friends, and she was also co-opted by the far right for expressing strong opinions, which were often accurate but also tactless. And as is often the case, lukewarm public opinion judges harshly and throws the baby out with the bathwater. Bye bye B.B. 'qui n'a besoin de personne en Harley Davidson' (...who doesn't need anyone on a Harley Davidson... - words and music of Serge Gainsbourg, who was one of her many lovers...) I mean, nobody's perfect... I'm well aware of her political inclination in later life and don't believe it's fair to reduce her to this. She's had a long life, it's always tricky to judge someone who was almost born a century ago by today's wildly different standards. Hopefully she'll be remembered for her unapologetic femininity and her lifelong fight for animal rights, which were brave and way ahead of their times. As usual in this day and age, no nuance in the discourse. The woman was 91 years old, she did good things, she did bad things. Focusing on the few negative years she's had in the end is certainly a choice. 1
LunaUniverse 4,164
Quite interesting to read how you can be a vile racist (Too racist for even the French government mind you) and you get flowery language talking about your life because you do one good thing in life or are iconic enough but hey what do I know I hate Charlie Kirk as much as anybody else and he can burn but the difference and bias in reaction here between this and that is apparent The only thing I wish for is the hope that her son can heal and live his life happily 1# Samoyed Stan

Not sure you can “nobody’s perfect” away that type of stuff, tbh. Just like anyone, she’s complicated and not all good, sure, but I don’t think any earlier positive contributions negate her negative behavior towards the end of her life. Both are true at the same time and the bad isn’t excused by the good, nor is the good fully outweighed by the bad.
