Perfect Illusion is a masterpiece

A song that perfectly captures the pain, tumult, and dissonance of heartbreak and disillusionment at an identity level iktr. IMO part of what’s so brilliant about Disease and PI is that they’re both (to differing extents) anti pop songs: angular, dissonant, building tension but never releasing etc. Gaga’s ability to do that is a part of what makes her such a gifted writer, imo. You have to know the rules incredibly well in order to break them, bend them, make people purposefully uncomfortable etc. I live for Miss Gar using the form (and the concept) of a pop song to create the visceral sense of gnawing at the bars of your enclosure. Also creating a pop song about feeling disillusioned with your public persona that’s also musically antagonistic towards being a conventional pop song is just deliciously meta.

My copium answer is: we don’t have as much of a solid sense of what was in the original demo compared to what the final product was (compared to SC) because, as far as I know, what KP played live of “Illusion” was after PI came out, so we don’t know what he brought to the room. But a more justifiable answer is: Gaga put a more definitive musical stamp in terms of aesthetic, performance, and presentation of this song than she did on the other two.

My (lightly copium based) conspiracy theory on PI, CTM, and SP is that Gar workshopped the songs with Kevin and Josh before they recorded their respective demos/live snippets that were eventually leaked. IMO all three of those songs sound more distinctly Gaga than either DWAS or SC, so that’s how I reconcile it in my French Vanilla fantasy. 
 

For PI specifically, Gaga says that they basically took the bones of Kevin’s demo and re-wrote the whole thing, whereas with DWAS, the story appears to be that Bruno was mostly finished and Gaga’s contribution was her verse + harmonies (and SC where her only only contribution appears to be the rap).

Yes, Kevin Parker wanted to tell about how her songwriting credits on DWAS and Sour Candy were all a Perfect Illusion that some fans got tricked by!

Both Gaga and Kevin’s versions are amazing and should be praised.
