MACATL 1,524
Artistically/critically Ray of Light will always be considered the better overall project. However, Confessions is just a better vibe and more of an upper, which I generally enjoy more.

The cultural impact also doesn’t match up. Ray of Light is still relevant to this day and is influencing much of the popular music today, for example Addison Rae and FKA Twigs Edited August 6 by Elderflower

A Fried Egg 8,886
I love Confessions but ROL is literally one of the best pop albums ever made. I understand why not everybody is going to get it though. It’s very spiritual and not the most digestible. To this day, Gaga hasn’t made an album that’s reached that level (TFM comes closest but it’s an EP). Edited August 6 by A Fried Egg

We were listening to Ray of Light yesterday and it almost gave me a head ache. All her tracks sound like this new age spiritual enlightenment that I agreed not to board. I don’t need to unlock my third eye (unless it’s my brown eye ) and transport to a plane of awakening. I just wanna dance! I love your comment because that album did unlock my third eye. That’s what it felt like.
elijahfan 26,202
Probably the 2 Madonna albums I absolutely can't choose between.
Cavadour 2,371
As an all-time fan of William Ørbit, i think his arrangements and instrumentation in Ray of Light resulted in the most atypical Madonna album. And the most complex and interesting too. I used to convert people who despised her music with this album. To me - and if you go through WØ discography you'll get the picture - Ray of Light is an Ørbit album with M. as guest vocalist. Ørbit music during the 90's paved the route to Psychill, Ambient Dub, Ethereal electronic. But his masterwork remains RoL. There's an interview out there where he speaks about how surprised he was to get a call from M. out of the blue and about how he relentlessly worked some guitar parts on the album, until his fingers were bleeding... Album choice : Strange Cargo III, Strange Cargo Hinterland and Torch Song - Toward The Unknown Region. Smother Em Eh 7,129
I LOVE both but ROL! ROL is very artistic and has it’s own unique sound which just puts it in a lane of its own. (Hence people calling a Artists best work, their “Ray Of Light”) Edited August 6 by Smother Em Eh Get Applause & G.U.Y to 1B views!
Bling 31,386
ROL easy. Love Confessions to death but How High and Push are not my favs. ROL has no skips and has SO many layers.

ROL to me is like her kind of touching the magic of Bjork in a more accessible way, it’s beautiful and artistic and I’m just really stunned she hasn’t gone anywhere near that quality since IMO. I love Confessions too, these are the only two Madonna albums I actually enjoy all the way through This comparison made me finally listen to it and I am actually pleasently surprised. Definitely HEAVY bjork inspiration, still boring because her voice and melodies just do nothing for me but the production is definitely giving Hunter, I Miss You, Possibly Maybe, that sort of distant underwater feeling. This William Orbit guy is a talent for sure happy 1k rep to me

So so cool and sexy here The Confessions tour is just so masterful. Like everything just fits so perfectly. The mixes and interpolations are some of her best live mixes. Even the concert film manages to truly convey a sense of being there, the emotional punches of Live to Tell/Isaac and the excitement of the dance tracks.
