Post-Surgery Discussion (Keep up to date with Gaga's progress!)

Spoke with a doctor friend of mine who said this type of surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis. Surprised that Gaga stayed at all in the hospital. I'm also surprised she was put out completely with anesthesia. This type of surgery is usually done orthroscopically and is no big deal - - beginning to wonder...

First, I doubt she stayed there more than maybe a night (or two if she got fever and they needed to give antibiotics). That photo was probably taken either on the day of the surgery or the next one.

Arthroscopical surgery (which means it's endoscopic in method), together with many other surgeries done endoscopically are on an outpatient basis, yet require strict rules as to the the patient's responses to the invasive measure and the anesthesia which actually forces them to keep many patients overnight or even longer still (suspected infection, having a slightly elevated temperature, reacting differently to anesthesia than expected or just taking longer to shake off its effects, adverse or suspected adverse reactions to the painkillers given - most of the time in very high doses - when the patient wakes up, etc. etc.).

Procedures that used to be incredibly invasive and high-risk that have now become routine and low-risk because of endoscopy don't suddenly become an easy thing for a patient's body to take either - your friend was probably emphasizing the paint-by-numbers nature of such operations in his/her profession. It's minor compared to a full-on, open laparotomy for example, sure. Seriously, surgeons and specialists throw around phrases like "And we're just gonna take a little look in there, takes an hour at the most, no big deal at all, you're out of here tomorrow morning!" when it comes to anything besides "open" surgeries. They aren't speaking about how the patient will feel afterwards and what they'll have to go through (even during their short stay in the hospital), they're just talking about those 45mins they are actually working on the patient. They say it's minor because it's a minimally invasive surgery, which is totally separate from how big the problem that is to be corrected actually is. Cartilage heals exceptionally slowly and we know the actual rehabilitation is very difficult and takes a lot of time.

As for anesthesia - they put you under completely for the removal of your appendix, which is considered even less invasive. They put you under for anything but nasal, sinus, carpal tunnel, spine and herniated disc surgery which can be done with local anesthesia. Nearly everything that requires full loss of consciousness does so because they need to go deeper, which is more dangerous.

Again, the fact that this photo popped up a day or so ago doesn't mean that's when it was taken. No need to wonder. ;)

I wouldn't put it that lightly. It's an easy fix considering how the surgery is performed, but rehabilitation is still tough. Cartilage heals slowly.

Yeah, recovery stinks, but the surgery itself was minor and minimally invasive.

You always describe things so well :flutter:

I only said that because I've done these procedures...I was an OR nurse for 2 years. I've seen these labral tears turn into hip replacement surgery years down the line...that's all.

So that Troy Carter article

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/nation_world/192922531.html

also says:

Carter says that for him, a Lady Gaga tour is like Groundhog Day, same thing every day - unless something goes wrong.

Two weeks ago, it did.

Gaga was due in Philadelphia for two shows last week, but had to cancel. After a year on tour, a hundred concerts running and dancing and climbing ladders backstage in monster platform shoes, she suffered a hip tear.

"She's pretty tough," said Carter, "so when you get that call from Gaga, you know it's serious."

Gaga canceled the final six weeks of her tour. She had surgery Wednesday in New York.

"Talking to the surgeon yesterday," Carter said on Friday, "it was much more serious than what we thought."

"It's been a bit of a busy week unwinding the tour," he added. "Personnel, vendors, insurance companies, etc."

The focus now, he said, is for Gaga to "take the time to rehabilitate."

Gaga pushed herself, and paid for it, something Carter understands and doesn't want to change.

"The most fun for me," he said, "is watching an artist experience new things for the first time. And if you're pushing it, you never run out of firsts, because you're always trying something new."

He could be speaking about himself.

But what does that mean? Initially, they didn't even think she had a tear. So is it relative to that or was the tear bad? Doesnt really specify

 Oh, this explains this tweet:

Lesson learned. Something quite special turns serious in a blink of an eye. Wait for the next frame. It's time for my baby to heal.

Wow she's already back in Chicago? I thought she would've stayed with her parents. Can't Taylor or her producers come see her?

her Parents house isn't really set up for wheelchair access judging from the Oprah interview. All the bedrooms are upstairs.

I was wondering the same. I'm curious as to when they considered it bad. Before they knew it was a tear or after doing surgery? I too think the tweet from her dad may have hinted that something may be worse. I hope not though. :(
