You can't bank on a "viral moment" happening, that is literally the worst plan to revive a struggling pop star's career :rip:

Make good music and people will buy it. Dr Luke wasn't even a part of its failure outside of stan Twitter, the album just sucks :rip:

Very much this. Her entire career over the last decade has been based on attempting to go viral…clearly it ain’t working team!!! I don’t understand why they’re treating one of the best selling artists of all time like an influencer…

I feel like I'm one of the few that liked a good majority of 143 , but it feels like ever since she started receiving all this backlash for working with Dr. Luke again, people from her team have came out and tried to take the blame for it. At the end of the day, she was the one that said yes to working with him. She is big enough and has enough power at this point in career to work with anybody and she made her choice, so here we are.

I think Katy's music is nostalgic and not that deep. I don't need her to try and come up with profound pop or try to sing acoustic barefoot in the grass with a guitar. But, as she gets older it feels corny that she hasn't really evolved; her music and personality just feel like something that has been stuck in 2016 and it turns people off. Since she's in la la land and surrounded by yes people, she can't seem to get that.

I agree. People are saying she should go with the Alanis/Fiona lite sound, but that just wouldn't work for who she is now. I dont even want something like that from Gaga at this point. She needs an album that she can tour with and that wouldn't be it. Her best work imo is usually when she fuses that sound into pop, like teenage dream, hummingbird heartbeat, or the one that got away. Songs that easily sound like they were written with just a guitar, but can expand into something bigger.

Now that they're friends again, she should hire T. Swift to write a duet about their shared hatred for John Mayer.

I don’t buy the whole “Capitol didn’t want to invest in the marketing of the album” idea. That sounds like her fans trying to make excuses for her flop. I was actually quite surprised to see how many spots she was booked for during the era. She also got a couple more music videos after WW.

As far as the viral moment comment… Yeah, let’s just focus on making good music.

True but to be fair, 143 is her only massive flop, if you don’t compare every album to her past glory.

Even Smile did well overall, with over 2 million units world wide.

Smile had 50k first week and Witness had 180k. And Witness is a huge flop when you consider the fact that Prism did 280k first week.  These are not numbers you'd expect from somebody with 9 #1 singles. And there's the argument she's a singles artist, but she hasn't had a song chart in the top 10 in like 10 years I think?

the first step should be firing this man because wow, what a mess

that's why I always laugh when people bash bobby or gaga's team... like look at this actual circus

I thought the same but then I looked him up and the man has a Wikipedia page based off just being in A&R 😭. He's worked on Jay-Z stuff, is responsible for Rihanna's Pon De Replay, he originally signed Katy, did Kelly Rowland's Here I Am, signed Iggy Azalea, signed Bebe Rexha, did Fifth Harmony's first album, and Zara Larsson's So Good. He does not know how to develop artists over long periods of time, but he's launched so many successful people and projects he's made his record companies billions.

Spots on shows isn't really on the label though, at least not entirely. Her A&R and manager can do that themselves, and it's not really gonna take a lot of lift considering the name Katy has built. Money is gonna be in radio, YouTube, Tik Tok, and streaming. And it's pretty obvious Capitol didn't really put much into those facets.

Where were you when I made a thread saying the album was bad but overhated :ladyhaha:

I have no words for how ridiculous and out-of-touch this guy is, and how out-of-touch Katy is for listening and agreeing with him. He's like a walking stereotype of what people think the music industry is like.

I have no idea how Katy could ever go back to her former glory. I think it's highly unrealistic to expect her to return to her former popularity even if she hadn't had backlash from the album, and this guy gassing her up with the worst advice ever is definitely not helping. I think all she really had to do was continue to make the best music she could without Luke, continuing on where she left off with Smile. Smile wasn't very commercially successful, but a lot of pop fans liked it, and she could've carved out this Kylie Minogue in America or Carly Rae-type success where people could go like, "actually, that album is really good," but you can't do that with 143, and now she's kind of marred her reputation, and very morally conscious, very informed people, like the typical kind of SJW r/Fauxmoi-type user who stans Beyonce and Taylor (that type of person is the audience for a sizeable fraction of pop music's audience for better or for worse) wants to listen to album almost entirely produced by a sexual predator.

Yeah, I thought 143 had a great rollout, it just didn't work because of Luke, and the material wasn't there (not just saying that either). I think if the music was good, people were willing and ready to enjoy it like a Doja album. I remember KP had a lot of goodwill and many viral nostalgia posts went viral online right before Woman's World, far more than Gaga -in fact, people were being weirdly bitchy about Gaga, and LG was receiving none of the same love despite being the poster girl (see here) for Indie Sleaze, which was, or is returning the way Y2K was circa 2020. I think maybe they probably didn't support the album like they did Witness, Prism, or Teenage Dream, but that was more likely to due to Capitol being in a strange place (I think they got sold to UMG and folded into Interscope in some weird corporate merger), and the fact that she's just an older artist.

doppelganger

It's harder for older pop stars who aren't musicians/songwriters to succeed, because the quality manufactured pop songs are often given to the young pop star of the moment.

Katy's recent album suffers from having bad songs.

While real artists like Gaga, Mariah continue to make quality music 20, 30 years into their careers. They could work with just about anyone and make it work.

It's one of the reasons I believe Rihanna will never release a new album.

I don't think she will. She is like almost a decade too late for that . If she were being innovative for Smile after the first flop (Witness), she would have regain a little of her creds and crowds. But instead she is doing just the same thing and then wasting away her chances with being a judge on American Idol, a show that hasn't been relevant since 2012. In showbiz, you are replaceable.
