thank u, next.

It's such a fascinating snapshot of a particularly odd moment in her life. Sweetener was an attempt to sort of push away that sadness of breaking up with Mac and the mental turmoil of Manchester, but it very much comes across as artificial. She spoke so much about being happy, but you could tell she wasn't.

Then when Mac died and she was finally ready to just be honest that she wasn't happy, it resulted in some of her most interesting songs. When she talks about empowering herself on this record, it doesn't feel fake, because she seems so willing to be honest about how she feels. She lets her darker emotions, sadder emotions, and messier emotions out freely.

It's one of the few times I've seen a popstar willing to make themselves look really emotionally messy, because she really was in reality.

Even songs 7 rings and break up with your girlfriend, being the obvious less emotionally driven picks, speak to a bit of a sharper attitude and more complicated frame of mind.

She explores this stuff without making full on sad music (though ghostin' is very sad), but instead through making darker music. Even with some songs being a little humorous on their face, tu,n sounds darker and moodier than all of her other work. It's a portrait of someone on an emotional roller coaster, and all of the weirdness and messiness that comes with it.

It's such an interesting look at someone who was in a very strange place while making it.

Eternal Sunshine. Great album from start to finish.

I haven’t listened to Thank U Next, Dangerous Woman and Sweetener in years except for the singles and Needy. Positions does have a couple of good songs here and there but I rarely go back to it.
