Chappell Roan credits Nicki Minaj for helping make queer music mainstream

Honestly super weird of her to name Rihanna & Nicki and not Gaga. We know she’s a big Gaga fan and we know she’s definitely influenced by her. Even the public constantly cites her as Gaga’s daughter or reminiscent of her. I’m smelling an Ava Max moment where she got tired of being compared so she’s now intentionally aboviding Gaga. I hate when artists do that, regardless of it being Gaga or not. Just be gracious, everybody has influences, even Gaga, don’t let the public & media ruin your favorite artist for you. OR maybe it was one of those moments when you get asked a question and your mind goes blank and forget everything you actually know so well. So I’m gonna give her the benefit of the doubt.

So here's what I'm assuming they're referencing. In which she essentially says that all of these artists owned SEXUALITY in their public image and in their music in order to allow Chapell to succeed. Aka Nicki talking about sex, Madonna talking about sex, Rihanna talking about sex, allowed for Chapell to talk about sex. Overall sexual conversation paved a space for queer music.

Yeah, if you actually watch the clip (:triggered:) it's pretty clear she's listing women who were unashamedly sexual throughout their careers, despite it harming their public image, and how that helped open doors for queer artists. Gaga has done many things but (minus BTW) her music alone has never really been that boundary pushing.

On the other hand this argument works bc even Lil Nas X and many other queer artists quote her as one of their biggest inspiration but the queerbaiting thing was so unserious... :saladga:

Oh agreed entirely on that.

And as non-american, I think saying Nicki made this kind of music mainstream is a very narrow americanised view. But specifically for american audiences, Nicki was part of the pantheon that truly popularised that kind of maximalist dance pop music in the 00s & 10s.

Im more confused about her crediting Rihanna lmao.

Nicki? I guess I could see how someone extremely stupid could see her work as breaking boundaries for queer people :icant:

First the stupid political takes, now this…

What on earth did Rihanna and Nicki sacrifice for the queer community????? Might as well have added Taylor to the list. :poot:

Edit: okay so that tweet is misleading as hell. First, the quote is old and second, she was kinda just speaking quickly and on her feet. I was under the impression that this was an interview she had been prepped for. Mess. I still highly disagree with the statement but it’s not as ridiculous as it was made to look.

No one is going to mention Rihanna?

Why would she reference her as well but not Gaga?

Everyone loves Rihanna but what has she actually done for queer people?

So odd she would reference Nicki and Rihanna over Gaga

Ngl I have super mixed feelings about Chappell sometimes

I'm not really a fan of hers but I think she just panicked with the interviewer trying to make her out as some trailblazer for queer music when queer music has already been mainstream for a long time.

You know what, I already thought it was very awkward she didn‘t interact with Gaga at all during the Grammys. She used to be a big fan (even performed Bad Romance on stage), but it seems to me like something‘s been off lately… It may be the influence of that awful rat Justin Tranter: Chappell’s gotten close to him (I think he produced some of her songs?), he might have badmouthed about Gaga being a „fake LGBTQ supporter“ and talked her into disliking her, since he himself turned on her for no reason. :fthis:

She must have meant in terms of catering to audiences. Surely. That must’ve been her intention. Right??? :gum:

edit: yep this was taken out of context LMFAOO
