I personally LOVE a slow burn and gothic imagery, and I thought the movie really delivered on that.  What disappointed me was the story.

While I understand that it's based off the book and the 1922 silent film, I don't think redoing the plot with extra frills was the way to go.  The implications of the story are antiquated, at best.  And even when the film tries to curve a lot of the misogyny by highlighting the absurdity of the time period's sexism (i.e. "she must wear her corset to ease her womb") or by trying to slightly elevate the female lead above "damsel in distress" (i.e. "priestess of Isis"), the story itself doesn't have much to say in the end.  I mean, what really was the message or heart of the story, and how does that message tie into contemporary times?

All in all, the movie tried to be/look/feel smart, but in actuality came out with not much to say aside from "scary vampire in scary castle brings plague and chases after a lady".

Loved it!! I was able to go to an early Friday the 13th screening and got to see a Q&A with main cast and Eggers in person. I also got to to that experience at the Hollywood Cemetery. So I've been obsessed since. I wasn't prepared for how popular the movie has gotten. I mean Eggers work hasn't been this mainstream but I am happy so much more are seeing it. I think people who are unfamiliar with the story don't take into consideration that it's what a 100 year old story based on silent movie and even before that it was Dracula. So the critiques on the story are not this movie because he stayed true to that previous one.

I liked it a lot. I wish it was scarier and I wish they didn’t show nosferatu so early in the film. It took the horror away from the remainder of the film. The acting and visuals were spectacular

Instantly five-starred and hearted it on my Letterboxd. Watching it on IMAX took the experience to another level, the voice of Count Orlok filled the whole room and it was chilling. Beautifully shot and I really liked the script. Definitely worth the watch!

If you saw the Murnau and Herzog versions, you're not missing anything. I feel that Eggers' version brings nothing new to the table.

While I absolutely adored it visually, I think some acting moments from almost everybody were a little lacking, but then they all equally had tremendous highs too. I wasn’t as moved by it as I wanted to be - I am a HUGE gothic literature fan, and though themes were present, it felt like they were just touched on. Like for example, sexuality - sex and sensuality are a HUGE theme in Carmilla, and therefore Dracula and later Nosferatu, and while sure, there was sex, it didn’t feel as haunting and carnal and disturbing and animalistic as it should’ve. I don’t mean I wanted to see p*rn, DEFINITELY NOT, but I didn’t feel moved by those scenes at all, it was like it was just happening instead of being this monumental aspect of the movie. Idk. Maybe that’s just me. Like the end -bro has been basically torturing this poor girl her entire life, and you’re telling me she finally gives herself up to him, knowing she’ll die, and… that’s it? I didn’t want to see insane f*cking lol, but I wanted to be upset or disturbed or confused. Not underwhelmed. What should’ve been a paramount moment felt like it just didn’t hit a climax (no pun intended). Idk I feel mean lol. The only sex scene I felt was true to what I was expecting was the corpse scene - all of the scenes should’ve felt like that. Not sensual or actually sexy, but carnal and wrong, yet you can still see the obvious longing and heartbreak and desire. Though I do really like how Ellen’s sexuality is seen as inherently wrong throughout, but some dude getting down with the corpse of his dead wife in the same room as his dead kids is brushed off by the male characters. That part I thoroughly liked, as it really emphasises how any form of female sexuality was seen as vile, yet something ACTUALLY vile was just like ‘oh well, bro misses his wife, fair enough, let’s burn them’ lol.

That’s just one example - I feel like most themes missed the mark that way. Like in the original, the shadow was this very haunting aspect, but it was just kinda… there in this version. It didn’t feel like the borderline terrifying ability it has in other adaptations and writings. Little things like that took me out of it. 

Overall I did really enjoy it though. Had it been an original instead of an adaptation, I think I would’ve enjoyed it more - it just had impossibly big shoes to fill. It certainly filled them visually, but idk about emotionally. I usually come out of movies (good and bad ones) at cinemas feeling really weird and struggle to kind of step back into reality, but that didn’t happen with this one. Kinda bizarre.

they got a whole lot of symbolism down INCREDIBLY though. Like the ocean scene. There are essays upon essays out there about how scenes like that - and I believe someone on twitter said there’s a similar scene in a 90s adaption of The Odyssey? - symbolise giving oneself up to a higher power, and generally treat the ocean as this great, sweeping, sexual being, acknowledging the undeniable sensuality of the sea. And like at the same time Orlock was travelling to Ellen ON A BOAT IN THE SEA, and then Thomas was also LOST IN THE WATER AT THE SAME TIME!! Then the whole thing about how ‘mentally sick’ women were often treated by spending time by the sea back then, and Ellen’s unexpected intimacy with it symbolising that it is something far more sinister than that. I thoroughly appreciated a lot of the symbolism, to the point that I actually think about some parts throughout the day lol. 

Some parts of this film were undoubtedly stupendous, while others were a little disappointing, but still very good nonetheless. The lows of the film were not lows in comparison to other films, but I think the highs were so high AND I also had such high expectations that they felt lower than they actually were in the moment. I truly did enjoy it overall though, and will definitely watch it again!!

Like Thomas in Orlok's castle; we know he's being fed upon, and we see it mostly from his perspective, under some kind of delirious spell like he's been drugged and it all feels very feverish and dream like; then it suddenly cuts to what's really happening - an unconscious Thomas lying on the floor with a disgusting naked creature straddling him and violently sucking the blood out of his chest. It's so rapey and feral I was genuinely shocked.

 

I loved this moment, truly disgusting and disturbing. It's also depicted as a very sexual non consensual act which makes it 10 times scarier
