It’s quite rock-inspired. Honestly I think the most similar Gaga song is PI. It also reminds me of Miley’s Plastic Hearts album - which I loved. These are great songs, but the sound doesn’t really fit the radio or the club - so the audience mainly becomes Gaga fans only. 2. Her voice is phenomenal, but she’s using her harsher scream-singing voice, which makes it a lot to listen to. It’s not that easy on the ears. It’s a loud, chaotic song. Once again, that reminds me of PI and songs like Enigma or Manicure where her voice is great but can be overpowering to a casual listener. 3. If you think about Gaga’s early hits, they were mainly electronic pop songs where her vocals are softer or autotuned (just dance, poker face, Alejandro, telephone, paparazzi, BTW). I can’t really explain it besides saying that her voice sounded like a pop singer, not a rock singer. Even BR doesn’t have screaming in it - it’s mainly talk-singing and pop vocals. Her visuals were whacky, but her sound was digestible electro pop. Disease isn’t like that sonically. 4. Her newer hits are more acoustic ballads showcasing her voice but in a smooth adult contemporary way, like Shallow and DWAS. She also kind of talks in those tracks too “I want your whisky mouth...” I actually think this type of singing is what set her apart in a good way back then (“silicone, saline, poison, inject me”) Regarding Shallow, I actually think her vocals are quite restrained in the beginning, obviously it gets more climatic and then there’s her wail, but even then, her voice never becomes rage-y like Perfect Illusion or Diamond Heart. Maybe I’m trying to say that the song is more romantic rather than angsty? Something Celine Dion could sing for example. And I think that’s why it connects with millions of people. While I kind of agree, I don't think her voice is that harsh. PI is a great song, but the way she sings it makes it unlistenable. Disease, however, isn't shoutier than Judas, which is currently becoming a hit after 13 years. The song is catchy and screams Tiktok viral. With correct marketing, it has no reason to become a hit. There is a limit to how shouty a song can get for pop music, and PI definitely passes that limit, Judas borders it and Disease is still under it. So it's doable, but that song is an exception. Gaga has a unique, signature, distinct voice and obviously sings well, but it's not exactly GP friendly. I have friends who are big Gaga fans and would dance to Disease if in a club or dance party but won’t be a song they will listen to on their own, or on their ear pods.
