2School4Cool 5,962
Honestly I could make a full 100 page PowerPoint to highlight what happened in the ARTPOP era, but as other people have said, she was teasing everything a year or more in advance to Applause being released as the lead single. We knew lyrics, song titles, even what songs were competing for a spot on the album. She’s really never been more transparent with her music, and as a fan that was amazing, but I think that’s a piece that a lot of people glaze over when they talk about the commercial success, or lack thereof, of ARTPOP. Yes it was bold, artistic, unique, experimental, chaotic, all things that don’t lend well to commercial success, but we had already heard almost the entirety of the album before it came out. We always talk about how leaks take away from streams and sales, but Gaga herself leaked songs, played them live, we heard demos, concepts of what songs were supposed to be (like I Wanna Be With You for example). This lead to some fans falling in love with demos and then being disappointed by the final versions because they differed from the version they initially fell in love with. There’s so so so much to analyze about the build up to the album and the response after it was released, honestly someone needs to write a full novel documenting ARTPOP See The Best In Everyone 9

Ronk 14,485
I don't think the rollout of the ARTPOP album was handled correctly. Here on GGD there was much anticipation and hype, but I don't think enough was done to advertise it to the public. On release day I went to Walmart with my camera when they opened, planning to photograph huge lines of people trying to grab the album that day. The excitement on GGD led me to think there would be long lines. There were no lines. I asked at the music department about the ARTPOP album. The staff there never heard of it, and I was the only person looking for it. One of the staff finally went in the back room and found a few copies of the album. He said that's all that was back there. Next I went to the big music store at the mall. Again, nobody was looking for the album, and there was no poster at the store advertising the album. There were a few copies on a rack of new releases. Nobody was there to buy them. I live outside the space time continuum. 4 1
Onlygaga 1,125
It was good and bad (mostly… bad ) there was such an amazing sense of community in the fandom back then, completely different from what we have now. Seeing Gaga doing her best while the GP (and even some “””monsters”””) sh!t on her was so heartbreaking. It was hard enough watching Gaga’s trauma unfold in real time, but not knowing if any projects were actually going to happen, how Gaga was feeling mentally and physically was really hard as well. Literally every single day someone was publishing an article on her body, her marijuana use, fake stories of her being forced into rehab, etc. Then there’s the whole p*r*z hilt*n situation and the Troy Carter situation. Homegirl really could not catch a break. ARTPOP really was an explosion of Gaga’s pain. I remember that era like it was yesterday and will forever be salty that we didn’t get the documentary (ofc I understand why). 3

hieronymus 9,634
1 hour ago, A Very Gaga Holida said: I’d like something to this, for context. Cause written like that, it doesn’t sound particularily special for her, but That was at the start of 2013. Back in the day, Gaga would be spotted and/or would post several times a day EVERY SINGLE DAY with different outfits etc., since 2008, she was always, always, always giving us something to eat. This needs to be pinned. It's not the slightest bit of an exaggeration.
Borisapillar 8,180
It was a nightmare and I agree with the poster who said we are lucky Gaga is alive. I truly thought she might join the 27 Club. It was rough.
Decodekid 26,648
It was messy, she was everywhere but depressed, done, and the media was not on her side anymore. We were in a bubble with all the ARTPOP teasing but honestly many things were happening Long Live Gretchen
Nathaniel Arven 1,594
ARTPOP was her comeback album after the hip injury. She started teasing it a year before, with quotes about reversing pop and i guess a tattoo. I think it was long before the album. It all came out in mid-end august with the first leak being the demo of Aura, and then came Applause. And then the magnificent ARTPOP swine fest with half the record live on all platforms at the same time. Then the album came out and the mess started when they went for DWYW instead of Venus for the second single.... idk. it was crazy. Epic and a lot of things that followed are still low-key unprecedented. edit : also she was competing against Roar by Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus becoming a woman so it was complicated to stand out at the Vma's when everybody was being outrageous . we have s--t tons of stand out artistic moments despite what people say ARTPOP era was rich and full of rage, passion, artistic freedom and funny things... I think that i one looks closely ARTPOP was all it promised to be (and a good album) xo Edited October 15 by Nathaniel Arven
SlowLoris 936
She teased about so many things that never came.... Also remember how out of left field some of it was. The "body revolution" thing, I never understood where she was going with that.... The random choice to have DWUW replace Venus as the second single.... That was really a time where she started feeling out-of-reach. She was very spacey during the era. A lot of her interviews came off as pretentious and strangely fake sounding. You also have to remember that, at the time, Born This Way and the culture around it also had a HUGE grip on the LM world. A lot of us were confused about how she seemed to pass from this very community-oriented, punky queer kids' diva to, all of a sudden, an unknowable and emotionally cold recluse. Looking back on it, it's obvious she was going through the wringer. She's even made references to it herself. I think she was going through a serious mental health crisis and just managed to keep it under wraps (mostly), aside from what she's openly told. nATAH 42,202
i mean there was no pre-era... it was total silence... she rightfully went into a blackout and i think she learnt the hard way the importance of withdrawing and taking time for herself. i'm glad she's taken that behaviour on board and found a good balance between being a star and being happy mother, what must i do? 63grekke 1,151
"the best song on ARTPOP is burqa" - joe germanotta "are you singing burqa" Gaga to joe in another video "ratchet ft azealia banks" "fiber optic wig" "start asking for iPads for christmas xoxo" "ARTPOP.... get ready for ARTPOP.... 2013...." "burqa burqa lets get psychotic burqa burqa lets get robotic, erotic" Honorary mentions - lyrics she teased: "it's been oolong since ive had a sip...." "a hybrid can withstand these things..." "i'd rather be poor and happy than rich and alone..." "we could be caught we're both convicted criminals of thought..." Ronk 14,485
I think a reason why some like or dislike a song is partly psychological. If a person heard great things about a song or an album, they might enjoy it more than if they had heard negativity, or nothing, about the song or album. I believe promo is very important, so the song or album is received with great expectations and enthusiasm. Compared to the number of GGD members, the GP is huge. And the GP is largely unaware of Gaga's problems and the tough time she was going through. So I think it is very important to pull out all the stops when promoting a new release. Hype it to the limit, to make people believe it is great before even listening to it. I understand the lack of promotion of ARTPOP may be largely due the tough time Gaga was going through, but I do think it contributed to any perceived failure of the album. Even worse, when the album was perceived to be flopping or under-performing, some of the negative feelings toward the album and its songs spilled over into GGD itself. I live outside the space time continuum.
