Campaign & stay loyal to the party even with an unpopular candidate etc in the hopes of being rewarded by Democrat supporters in the next cycle. Nixon supported Goldwater despite internal party conflicts and personal opposition to him, ended up being rewarded with the nomination and eventual keys to the WH in 68....
