Lucas 27,392
Imagine having to spend your days constantly travelling, by bus or plane, for HOURS, sleeping at a different place every night, having to go to soundcheck etc, having to sing and perform live for like 90 mins, and this for months and for dozens if not a hundred of dates... That must be absolutely exhausting.

After months of meetings with a hundred different departments for visual choices, setlist, artistic direction etc. Then shoots for visuals and promo, etc. Then weeks/months of practice for sound, choreo, etc.

While I do agree that I love touring artists and that it gives the whole package, "recording artist" doesn't necessarily include "touring" in its definition and artists like that are not scamming you, like you feel. Touring is not and never has been a requirement of being an artist. There is nothing about the process of making music that makes a tour a vital part of the work. Tours are little more than an extension of an album or a promotional tour and exist only for the benefit of the fans. While yes it makes money for the artist, it is often detrimental to their work hence we see an artist tour and then disappear for a few years in most cases. There have been plenty of artists over the years who gave up touring because they found that it wasn't good for them anymore, but they continued to be studio acts. The Beatles, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, REM, Talking Heads, and Kate Bush all gave the touring life up but continued to be prolific studio acts. Are they--some of the greatest and most influential music acts of all time--lesser because they decided not to tour? Should they have "gotten a different job"? Borislshere 53,086
Instead of ragging on Miley for being honest and open about not wanting to tour, give props to those who go through all of it and still continue to tour! I hope she finds a peaceful medium. I couldn’t imagine touring for years on end

"The grass is always greener on the other side," though, as the saying goes. I think it starts like this for a lot of people but quickly gets shown to them that that's not really what ends up happening. You don't really see the world, you see various hotel rooms and venues around the world. The opportunities to go and visit the cities that you're in are in are rare, the schedule you have to keep is tight, and the mental engagement that's required of you the whole time is exhausting. I've never done a world tour but I have been a part of a touring production that did three weeks just around a couple states and even that completely exhausted me. I can't imagine what contending with jet lag and jumping from country to country, continent to continent, often overnight must be like.

Railing 2,799
why are pop fans so brainwashed with the idea that a musician = a performer? A lot of artists don't do concerts and that's okay. It literally isn't in the job description. A lot of music fans don't even attend concerts, myself included. At this point, I feel like a majority of artists only do shows for either the fan interaction, or the ability to make any money on their work, since streaming revenue is ****ed. Artists shouldn't have to tour, the streamers and labels should have to pay their artists more money.
