With over a billion records sold worldwide, including 13 Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, Michael Jackson is one of the greatest selling musicians who ever lived. A consummate professional and perpetual innovator, he will forever be remembered as the King of Pop. His four-decade discography includes many songs that form the cultural fabric of modern pop music, from the novelty Halloween funk of ‘Thriller’ to the plaintive paranoia of ‘Billie Jean’; from the percussive thump of ‘Smooth Criminal’ to the buttery balladry of ‘You Are Not Alone’. Put simply, Michael Jackson defined the megastar.

In 2003, many of Michael’s chart-toppers (plus one new track and, confusingly, the Invincible deep cut ‘Break of Dawn’) were collected into the Number Ones greatest hits album – and that’s what we’ll be rating. Gagadaily has rated most of MJ’s studio albums over the past couple of years (in @Cello’s fabulous megarates), but I can’t remember the last time we did a Best Of rate like this, spanning over thirty years’ worth of material. I genuinely can’t predict which song will win, and that’s a thriller of a feeling.

 

We’ll be rating all the songs on the Number Ones compilation. That’s 18 songs from the US edition, plus the two extra ones that are only on the European edition. I know 20 songs sounds daunting, but you probably know most of them already and you can find them all in one place in this handy playlist:

If you know this discography like the back of your (sequin-gloved) hand, feel free to submit your votes whenever you’re ready. Or if you haven’t heard some of these songs for a while, why not listen through the playlist a few times and re-familiarise yourself with this incredible collection of songs? If you've never heard these songs before: a) you're lying, b) what are you waiting for??!, c) you will LOVE them.

Good question! I think if you know the original album versions, feel free to rate those. I’d hate for something like Earth Song to get a low placement just because of the atrocious edit
