Doesn't matter if the switch was on or off, it was still him that that did all the stuff. Even after all that Ripper stuff the audacity of him to walk around pretend to be the good cop. I remember finding both Stefan and Damon's characters to both be really boring and mostly one dimensional with a very tired dynamic that you see in a lot of stories. Stefan was in a constant battle trying to be good and it got kinda boring. Damon was just pure trash, on my last rewatch I was so annoyed at how selfish he was and always making the worst and dumbest decisions, but they tried so hard to redeem him every single time.
