Variety: Why are the Weeknd’s acting skills nonexistent?

In “The Idol,” the Weeknd plays Tedros a Svengali character who does not possess a heart of gold or maybe even a personality. Early in his appearance, he sidles up to Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn - the worst moniker ever for a single named pop star. He whispers something to her.

“Welcome to my little shιthole.”

I don’t think he was talking about his acting chops, but one never knows.

The Weeknd’s performance is not alone in its badness on a show.

[...]

I thought to myself that Tedros/Tesfaye needed either a triple espresso or a white line. Imagine my surprise when scant minutes later he shows up at Jocelyn’s palace and actually does a line!  I regret to inform you that it does not help. He immediately turns to a mirror and tries out a pickup greeting: “Hello Angel.” He says it twice, but it has neither a hint of illicitness or the emotional pathos of Alec Baldwin psyching himself up to a mirror on “30 Rock.”

Gaga made the transition from singing to acting look too easy...now everyone thinks they can be Meryl Streep.

Came here to write the EXACT same thing as soon as I read the title lmaooo it's so true. Now they all want to act and think it's easy yet no one is delivering even a 5/10 performance.

The Weeknd is one of the least problematic celebs out there.

Mister G

Everyone saw how smooth of a transition Gaga made from music into acting with her lead roles in American Horror Story Hotel and A Star is Born so just like @PunkTheFunk indicated, everyone thinks they can do the same thing overnight. What works for Gaga is that she was always theatrical and focused on performance art so when she does something it just works very well. Others try, and you end up with craziness like this. Weeknd is so talented musically but I’ve heard that this show has left people feeling disturbed and cringed.

i didnt watch it but maybe bc not every "singer/musician" can just instantly become an "actor" -- 2 totally different crafts

unless you're a musical theater person like queen stef it's not just a given to do that transition

said it before and i'll say it again -- "lady gaga" remains one of gaga's best acting roles she's ever played! her whole early persona was litterally acting (to an extent. she was true to herself but also, she was definitely building a persona) and she did such a good job at it too that some of us felt betrayed when she started dismantling that persona lol

They all, unfortunately, forget that Gaga literally trained to be an actress before she became a pop star 🤡

Amen to that. It was character building, world building, improv, constantly evolving...really next level ****

King of the Fall

The Weeknd is not an actor so obviously he is not going to be amazing or anything, especially for his first role. That said, I feel like critics and the press are overblowing how bad this show is. It is an extremely bland plotline, not some evil and transgressive shitshow. My real gripe was that the idol advetised itself as edgy, controversial and coming from the sick imagination of Sam Levinson and yet what we got was a conventially boring soft core ****o. The creative vision and script are the real issues not Abel or Lilly Rose Depp.

Hey, I'm king of the world, you ought to hear my song, you come on measure me, I'm twenty inches long
