I went to a music event at the start of the year where the gendered toilets had just paper signs over them saying 'ALL TOILETS ARE GENDER-NEUTRAL FOR THIS EVENT'.

As I (male) came out of the toilet a woman said excuse me its for women. I pointed to sign and said its gender neutral and she told me that it was disrespectful of me as a man to use the toilet women are also using/waiting to use and that my entitlement was showing by being 'bold' enough to use them and take priority over women

I've never used gender-neutral toilets since

Since it wasn't clear or enforced, I understand why it was such a fuss.

Hope next time you have better experience with it. When you get to try it again.

I mean. Good :laughga:

I don't fully understand why they're segregated to begin with tbh.

Inb4 "it's a safety thing". If a man wanted to assault a woman in a public bathroom, a dress sign on the door ain't stopping him :messga:

But most sexual assaults are not planned, it usually happens randomly when the opportunity appears. Men and women sharing the same bathroom will create an environment where its more likely for a woman to be sexually assaulted. Yes a male sexual assaulter can still enter a womans only bathroom to sexually assault someone, but thats less likely to happen as most sexual assaults are not planned. Im fine with a crowded event like concerts having a gender neutral bathroom, but if its an empty unsafe areas at night, thats a different story.

Men and women also use toilets differently, like how men pee all over toilet seats unlike women. And women use the bathroom for different things like adjusting their bra in the mirror and fix their makeup. So having bathrooms segregated makes perfect sense.

I know this is selfish, but my favorite part of separation is the fact that the Men’s room never has a line while it’s out the door for the Women’s.

This makes it more fair, I agree, but I’ll miss this selfish little benefit 😂

Most also happen from people you know and not strangers, too. Idk I think we blow the risks of sexual assault in a bathroom a little out of proportion when SA data doesn’t really back it up entirely

Just because its more likely to happen by a family member / friend, doesnt mean sexual assault isnt a huge problem outside of that. It also depends on what you consider sexual assault, as women are cat called on a daily basis by strangers. You also live in safe areas, but sharing a bathroom with men isnt safe for alot of people.

i mean gender neutral toilets only really work where there's no urinals. for cubicles/stalls i could care less but whenever i've tried to use male toilets rebranded as gender-neutral ones all the stalls are obviously taken up by women, and as someone with social anxiety i can't use a urinal so :triggered:

There has been absolutely no evidence to suggest that gender neutral restrooms increase the risk of SA

Cat calling is literally under the definition of harassment not assault. No, it isn’t just what you consider it to be if we’re making laws around it lmao there has to be standard definitions or we can’t actually address the problems via lawmaking.

But to the broader point, that logic doesn’t make any sense. Should everything be gender segregated, then? Because women could theoretically be assaulted anywhere at anytime. The point that’s being made is that data has shown the majority of sexual assaults happen in your own home or in a home—not in bathrooms. Just because it *could* happen there doesn’t mean that we need to segregate bathrooms to prevent it, because by that logic any public space should be segregated bc you never know. Like, should bars and clubs be gender segregated bc sexual harassment and assault can happen there, too. It’s just a bit of a silly rabbit hole to go down for ultimately little return as there are other, better ways to tackle sexual assault.

This study was done at a school where its kids in crowded areas. Thats different from a public toilet in a gas station.

Obviously we shouldnt segregate everything because of a possibility of sexual assault. But places where women are having a private time where they get naked, and could be vulnerable to sexual assault should be segregated. While a public place like an airport or a gym shouldnt be segregated.

And I already said just because its more likely a family will sexually assault you, doesnt mean none families sexual assaults arent a big problem.
