NYPD Encourages Car Owners To Use Airtags To Deter Car Thefts

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and his police department have asked residents to help fight vehicle theft in the city by placing Apple AirTags in their cars.

AirTags are small, circular tracking devices that allow users to monitor the location of their belongings through the "Find My" app on their iPhones. If a vehicle is stolen with an AirTag inside, residents will be able to track their car and work with police officers to recover it.

Apple sells AirTags starting at $29, and Adams said a nonprofit organization in New York has donated 500 of the devices to distribute to residents for free.

The New York City Police Department shared a video Sunday demonstrating how residents can use an AirTag to protect their vehicles. Jeffrey Maddrey, the chief of the department, wrote in a tweet that the "21st century calls for 21st century policing."

"AirTags in your car will help us recover your vehicle if it's stolen," the NYPD tweet said. "We'll use our drones, our StarChase technology & good old fashion police work to safely recover your stolen car. Help us help you, get an AirTag"

Adams said Kia, Hyundai and Honda vehicles have been particularly vulnerable to theft, in part because of a trend circulating on TikTok.

In an April press release, Adams said New York City saw an 890% increase in Kia thefts at the end of last year and a 766% increase in Hyundai thefts in the preceding months. The city has joined a national lawsuit that aims to hold the vehicle manufacturers accountable for failing to install standard anti-theft measures in certain models.

Likely because the donators only donated AirTags and there are more Apple devices users in USA. But I suppose you can also use different brands.

The 2023 fiscal year budget of the NYPD is about $5,300,000,000

and their best way to solve car theft is to tell people (potential victims) to place a $30 device in their car.

Kia and Hyundai models made between like 2012 and 2021 are easy to steal because of some cheap design choices made by the car makers. Tutorials on how to steal them with just a USB chord were shared all over TikTok and YouTube so punks have been going around stealing cars. They tried to steal my car twice but since it’s a 2022 model they weren’t able to. I recommend you get an AirTag and a steering wheel lock. That’s what I use now.

It's crazy how car theft has become bigger and bigger in recent years and car companies are only making it easier to do. In Puerto Rico my sister in law had hers stolen a few weeks ago and it was a nightmare from beginning to end. When the police found it it was only a shell. The robbers ripped everything off in a matter of hours before the police could find it. There were two more next to it, including a neighbor's.

Thankfully the insurance offered her a new one. But that doesn't make the whole situation less traumatizing. She was completely broken and now she fears they might steal her new one too. 

Here in NC the police was giving out steering wheel locks for free last Saturday. We know it won't do much but it might make it a bit difficult if they try to steal our car. We are getting AirTags and Smart Tags for the cars too.

omg... I trusted you @Kia! It's a 2016 Soul so hopefully no one wants to steal it lol but that is crazyyy! Good for you for protecting yourself. I've always been interested in a AirTag but I've never got one yet lol. Scary that people have already tried twice!

Sorry but a major shouldn’t be asking people to buy AirTags, there are other companies that make similar products too. I’m an Apple user but they already have a massive percentage of markets around the world in all that they sell. They don’t need extra promotion or advertising. They’re even turning into a bank now ffs.
