Wasn’t there back and forth drama between Rita Ora and Calvin Harris because he didn’t want to release a song that he produced for her which she called a hit and when it was finally released it sounded very mid?

I Will Never Let You Down was #1 in the UK
Calvin refused to give her permission to perform it at award show in the US so she had to cancel her performance.

The story just doesn't make sense. The writer/producer of a song can stop it being formed by the artist? It doesn't make sense.

Rita is only the performer, Calvin has the rights to this song as songwriter and producer so he could ban her from performing it on TV.
he confirmed it and said he 'had a damn good reason'

Well, this is weird. As I recall, that album was all set and ready to go because the lead was so successful, it was also one of her few songs to chart in the US. But it got cancelled when she and Calvin split as he refused to give her permission to release the music they'd worked on. Sure enough, it says on Wikipedia that the album was due for release in summer 2014 but was postponed due to their split and Calvin retracting permission. And that the lead was one of four songs she'd worked on with Calvin for the album. It was widely reported at the time. It doesn't seem as if it would take much to get a new producer to help with 4 replacement songs but of course, one of the tracks was the successful lead single. Which would mean the album's roll-out would need to be preceded with a new lead (something that can take a long time to work on to make sure it's perfect). So, things got pushed back and she ended up putting out out new singles in 2015 that never came to fruition. Whether they were the planned subsequent singles, we'll never know, but Calvin definitely worked on multiple songs intended for that album and everything was all set until the split ruined everything. If it was just one unreleased song, the album could've pretty much been released without a hitch. So, what is the truth?

All I know is, Rita's star was on the rise at the time and her career was going along just nicely, she was starting to make a name for herself in America, the second album was all set to be released just 2 years after the last one and then Calvin split up with her, she had to start over completely from scratch and she struggled with label issues and album releases ever since. There's no telling where her career would've gone had the second album gone according to plan but perhaps Roc Nation would've given her priority. I have no idea why she moved away from Atlantic considering her 2018 album was very successful. They say that one thing can change the entire course of your life and I think this is proof of that.

(Love your post, just wanted to focus on this question  )

I wonder if Calvin maybe had an executive Role for the Project as well? Maybe he also put producers / writers on board that jumped the ship after the breakup? I remember back in the day the Album was hyped up a lot especially because of CH involvement. Since that is all shelved now, let‘s hope it leaks and we get to find out more about what kind of great Pop Album it could‘ve been :kara:

I feel so bad for Rita. I think she has a lot of Potential to become a great Popstar, but the long hiatus due to the breakup really burnt most of her bridges.

I don’t believe him.  It was obvious she had a whole album ready to drop and it would’ve been successful after I Will Never Let You Down smashed.  He’s free to deny it but he has form after banning her from performing IWNLYD already.
