They were fighting for the Ukrainian Army. They are the Russian regime calls ''foreign/ Western mercenaries'', one of the things they despise the most. As unfair and painful to watch it, it was expected those caught in Mariupol (especially the ''neo-Nazi'' Azov Batalion) will be put to death. Which goes against internationally recognized legislation on what should happen on war prisoners.. I heard somebody arguing how Russia isn't the one doing the killing, it's the Donetsk People's Republic. As if that's not subordinate to Russia and a Russian creation to begin with.
