David Lee Roth, who used to be the lead singer of 80s legends Van Halen, just cancelled his entire Las Vegas residency over  Omicron/Covid. Reports say he had many sold out shows and ticket sales were “robust” so it really is about safety. Here in Toronto, Canada, we’re now in a new lockdown because of Covid.  All indoor dining, movies, gyms, amusement parks, etc are closed. And our numbers are less than in the US. Why aren’t other acts not cancelling or postponing their shows at this point?  Is Vegas living in a bubble?

I think that eventually they will get cancelled, they can't keep ignoring the facts and stats.

Soon enough they eventually will. It is a day by day monitoring for each cities. If cases are getting high, they will.

putting sheer sleazy financial considerations aside, i think promoters and artists are also just conflicted bc in a way this may just be the way the world is now? if this happens every winter or something are we really going to keep canceling stuff or at a certain point does going to a concert just become a risk people have to think about on their own? i have no idea if i agree with that or not, but i think that's what a lot of folks are thinking. I wish at the very least live nation, etcetera would implement vax and mask mandates for all shows right now

I completely understand why artists would want to but at the same time Omicron hasn’t been as dangerous as other variants. I personally can see requiring vaccinations but not requiring a negative test as well. Adele is requiring both and it’s kind of annoying tbh.

That means Dua Lipa and Charli XCX would need to consider canceling or postponing their upcoming shows. I doubt they will, so it may very well fall upon the cities and states to decree if they’re shutting things down. I can tell you right now the states nearby aren’t pushing for those anytime soon so we’ll see what happens…

This variant is not as dangerous, but you know vaccinated people are also carrying the virus right? I don't know in your country but in mine the amount of infected people is reaching or even exceeding the one in the first wave. And the mortality might be lower now, but these people are compromising the health system and people are still dying for other reasons because they can't be treated properly

This.

I'm still seeing people not quite understanding that Omicron is getting past the vaccine much easier than any other variant so far. Hell i'm double vaxxed and boosted and it got me super easy. And when leaders won't shut down again, it is super easy to catch the virus just going about your daily life. We're seeing numbers like never before because effectively we don't have that much in place to actually stop the spread.

I understand vaccinated people can carry it but if the chances of hospitalization/death are minimal and everyone at the show is vaccinated does it really matter? At some point we have to move on. If unvaccinated people want to take the risk then so be it. Their choice.

Btw I think if you’re unvaccinated and go to the hospital with Covid you should be sent away. Shouldn’t be the public’s problem.

That's not how healthcare systems work unfortunately. Omicron infects more people than Delta and while it's not as dangerous, it still puts a lot of strain on the medical sector because many people end up in hospitals when a many more people are infected, which means that we are also compromising other sections of the healthcare system (chronic illnesses, etc.) because hospitals simply can't handle that many people at once. It's not only a matter of unvaccinated people.

Where I live there is a huge record number of cases BUT still fewer hospitalizations then a year ago. This is the case from what I understand in most places. Are we to go back to shutting down everything even though the outlook is better? That wouldn’t make any sense.

I have tickets for Dua in Toronto for next month and there’s no way it’s happening her because we’re in lockdown. She’ll have to cancel or postpone at least our date.

I agree that at a certain point we need to live our lives and accept it’s part of our lives and we need to stay vaccinated and assess the risks. But now seems to early for that as hospitals are still getting overwhelmed and we’re still learning about it. I do think they should cancel the shows right now to try to slow the spread.
