Teletubby 149,861
Saweetie for Glamour Magazine: What's interesting about pretty privilege is that sometimes that term is associated it with me. However, my mum did not play that — for better or lack of words. She was very strong on me getting good grades. My dad was really strong on me being the best athlete on the team. So it's nothing that I've ever used as a crutch or as a privilege because my parents, drilled into me a strong work ethic and that you need to be smart. You need to be knowledgeable. You need to know what's going on in your surroundings. I'm aware that I'm a pretty woman, but it's never something that I use to get me through the challenges or levels of my life. I've always been a straight-A student. There was a time in my [school] life where I had a 4.3 GPA. There was a point where I was female athlete of the year. So I'm a very hard worker and I've never used pretty privilege for my advantage. source "You b*tch!" ~ Rat Boy

hpmcmill 1,998
I believe it— there’s some people who all they can rely on is their looks (think Austin Mahone, which hey no complaints), and then others who are super talented, hardworking and just happen to also be sexy and made it big. Gaga’s looks may have helped her garner attention and make headlines she needed to become astronomical, but she wouldn’t be anywhere close to where she is without the work ethic, brains and talent. Not praising Saweetie— don’t know much about her talent. I just think it’s very reasonable she could have been expected to excel as a student and at sports, and fame and riches came much later that she smartly capitalized off of. Just saw her on episode of Cooking with Paris (Hilton), and enjoyed her.

For example in terms of opportunities and salary. But most types of privilege don't need to be "actively used" and have loads of advantages that don't get noticed by those who enjoy them. That doesn't negate any achievements by attractive though. But it's silly to claim that you "don't use" your priviledge. StrawberryBlond 14,873
Good on her for knowing her worth and being aware that your other attributes can shine through no matter how you look. Newsflash: pretty people can be talented and hard-working too. We're not just one thing, we are complex, multi-faceted beings. To suggest that pretty people are mediocre in every other way has no basis in reality and discounts the achievements of people because of (ironically) superficial ideas. 12 hours ago, CautiousLurker said: Correct me if I'm wrong - you don't really need to use pretty privilege, it kinda does the work for you, right? Can someone hot weigh in? Idk how it works, I'm ugly Yes, it works independently but you can consciously channel it. Opting for a generically attractive appearance is the most common way. And for women especially, using your sexuality to court male approval and appearing a bit helpless (for some men, a hot damsel in distress is like catnip to them) is a major way to get ahead. Not every pretty person will utilise these options, so pretty privilege won't operate to the same extent for every one of them. It's a myth that all attractive people are given the same opportunities. It depends on how far the individual wants to push what they've got. I will say, that as much as pretty privilege is a thing, it's undeniable that, especially nowadays, looks can only get you so far. To reach the upper echelons of wealth, fame and success, especially maintaining it over a long period of time, takes talent, hard work, intelligence, business savvy, intuition, dedication, determination. It's rare to see someone reach the upper echelons if they're nothing but a pretty face. And even those that do burn out fast.

I believe Gaga did benefit from pretty privilege because if she were ugly she would have never gotten signed to a record label despite her talent. There were people that made fun of her looks back then but she was also considered unconventionally beautiful. Anyway, I love Saweetie but she did benefit from pretty privilege as well, it doesn’t mean she didn’t work hard though so I see where she’s coming from.
