Versatility?

Mother of Puppies

I don't even know how to name this thread, but listening to Jazz the last days & my mom's comment on it has kind of made me think about this again... my mom said something like "you always have your phases and like so many different things that are so in contrast to each other" - She's right and it's not meant in a bad way.

I'm thinking about finding the right words...

When I was younger I always liked a lot of different things. I was never the type of person to just like one certain thing or maybe a few that are similar.

My interests & taste (+ lifestyle) in general have always been very in contrast to each other for a lot of people. I don't think I'm eccentric, but I always had a hard time to adhere to one or just a few styles when it comes to music, movies, interior, fashion and interests in general...

So when I would tell my friends or family what kind of music I listen to, what my interior style is etc. they 'd usually all be quite surprised by my taste and "wouldn't have thought that about me" and find that it doesn't necessarily fit or go together.. :ohwell:

I can find joy in a lot of things - I have always been so interested in basically everything, but I used to "hide" this side of me because I used to be embarassed. I acted as if I was only interested in the "cool" things and kept my love for the "weirder" things to myself. I used to hide the fact that I'm really into Greek, Roman & Egyptian Mythology/History (and dinosaurs) and know a lot about it. I also like to watch "Bear Grylls" and I'm interested in survival techniques. I also like many different interior styles and I like to mix em up. (I like old vintage pieces but also modern things) I love hiking and nature, but I'm also very into computers and technology. There were so many professions I wanted to do when I was younger. (filmmaker, real estate agent, photographer, vet, paleontologist and many more & they are all so different and don't have anything in common)

I listen to jazz (Gaga made me love it even more than before) but I also love techno, EDM and house (anything electronic) Obviously good pop music, indie pop as well as instrumental music. My taste in TV series is a whole other thing & very different from what a lot of people watch. :bear: (not gonna go into detail)

I figured that I can also do different things professionally now so I'm about to start a new thing soon, because why not try it? Gaga is a musician of many different genres, an actress, entrepreneur, philanthropist etc.

So my point is that Gaga has shown me that it's ok to be "versatile" - to like and do different things even if they seem to be in total contrast to each other. You can be a jazz singer and love Heavy Metal at the same time! (I know it's good to specialize in something, which is what u learn early on - you can't be the best in everything, but I think we all don't even need to be the best anyways)

So what about you? Do you think your taste in music, fashion, interests etc. is versatile or in contrast to each other?

I can’t believe versatility is seen as bad by many people. It’s a blessing that you have so many different interests and not being limited to just one :excited:

i love how you express it, I guess i can say it too in many ways, and sometimes it’s a little overwhelming when you have to commit to do just one thing for a long time (like choosing a major :saladga:) but it’s really a virtue overall, also keeping an open mind comes with that too

Recently I am so into Barbie and girl it’s like rocket science for many people to understand that not only young girls love fashion dolls.

Maybe not a bad thing when you're a famous talented artist, but as an average person it may come off as weird.

omg, yes  you're so right! Can you believe what a struggle it has been for me to choose what to study at uni? :air: I wanted to do everything but had to decide for one thing, which was so hard. This "versatility" has a very bad side to it (at least for me) I always have a hard time to decide for one thing, because I usually like it all. :poot: (This is the one thing that my sister is annoyed by) lol

I totally vibe with this! I feel as if I am a jack of all trades in my professional life. I majored in chemistry in university but also did classes in ancient Latin, psychology, and a ton of biology! Being appreciative and admiring many different things is a great opportunity for us in the information age.

In terms of music I get that too! Yesterday I had a playlist on shuffle and the first song was from Carly Rae Jepsen then the next song was Nine Inch Nails then the one after that was Cardi B.

I think Gaga has showed us that there are so many wonderful forms of artistic expression. She has taught us that it's okay to explore and experiment! It really is great to keep an open mind and enjoy art in all it's forms.

Yup, some time I am top, sometimes I am bottom.

Also, I can be nice, and the worst villain you'll meet when crossed 🦂🦂🦂

I'm like that too! I feel like people constantly assume wrongly of me, or are surprised when I am interested in something they wouldn't expect

There's  nothing wrong with liking a wide variety of things! In fact I think it's better to keep an open mind rather than restrict yourself

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
