Midnight Mass (Discussion)

Hey munchkins. :gaysia:

For those of you who don't know this show, it was created by Mike Flanagan, the creator of Haunting of Hill House and Haunting of Bly Manor. If you haven't gotten a chance to watch this series, do yourself a favour and binge watch all seven episodes NOW! If you are a fan of slow burning horror and shows that just keep building dread, you will love this show because the final payoff is so worth it! If you were a fan of the previous Haunting series, you will love Midnight Mass because it continues on Mike Flanagan's absolutely God given talent of storytelling with an immense amount of depth and thoughtfulness but in the context of horror. If you are looking for jump scares this is not the show for you, but if you are looking for a show that stays with you in its thought provoking questions and themes then this is right up your alley. I like to think that I can handle horror, but this is possibly one of the most intense, and heaviest pieces of horror just due to its intense use of the Bible and references to Christian faith. I don't know if it is cause I was watching this quite late but a particular scene in the 6th episode made me legit panic - the panic you feel when you see something you feel you are not supposed to. Also this goes without mentioning, but each and every performance was stellar - it's shows like this and performances like this that are bringing respect back to the horror genre.  I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts on the series so we can have a really great discussion because there is so much to unpack and reveal even long after the credits roll. But as a courtesy to those who have not yet seen it and would like to, keep all spoilers in the spoiler tag.

Here is the trailer for those who have missed it:

And if this doesn't convince you enough, here is what Stephen King had to say of the show:

"MIDNIGHT MASS, on Netflix: Mike Flanagan has created a dense, beautifully photographed terror tale that climbs to a high pitch of horror by the 7th and last episode."

Meredith Grey

I’m gonna watch tonight! Fun fact: the book the woman wrote in the movie hush was called “Midnight Mass” and she even references the characters Erin and Riley. The same book appears in Gerald’s Game plus two of the actors from Hush appear in Midnight Mass. He must have been working on this script for a while so I have high high hopes for this!

If I'm not mistaken, this show has been around 10 years in the making for Mike Flanagan! You can honestly feel the soul and the effort being poured into it.

This looks so good but I’m really scared of horror so I’m nervous to watch it :bradley:

It’s not too scary as much as it is thought provoking and creepy. I think even people who aren’t too good with horror will appreciate the storytelling.

I was wondering if it’s worth it?

Absolutely. It's currently got a 94% fresh rating on rotten tomatoes, and there are a plethora of articles saying it's one of the best pieces of horror television. I finished it two days ago and I still can't get it out of my head.

DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'Y WATCHED AS THIS CAN CONTAIN SPOILERS (for some reason it won't let me put something on spoiler so I'll be kinda vague :enigma:

Just finished and lord.. I absolutely loved it. To be totally honest I found the first two episodes a bit slow but it picked up during the 3rd. I was NOT expecting the show to go towards that direction and Ep. 6 was quite scary and made me feel something weird, I think those who watched know what particular big scene I'm referring too. I also loved how biblical it is, and it really makes you wonder about God's plan and how we, as human beings, can not really comprehend it much less put it in march. There are a few things that I would have loved they developed more such as the story of *that* creature and why it revealed itself like that, why was it here, and all that. It also made me think that none of what happened was truly God's plan but humans were deceived because of our naive nature. I believe the creature was actually a typical vampire who you just put on a show to have a feast lol

Just finished episode 2 and I'm loving it.

But is anyone else finding the very obvious old age makeup on some of the actors a little distracting? Or is that just me?

I know what you are referring to and I found that odd as well. But without giving anything away, it will make sense pretty soon :sis:.

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE REFERRING TO IN EPISODE 6! I'm so glad someone else feels this way. I have never had a show give me the chills the way that particular scene did.

Also if you don't mind, can you edit your post so the spoiler is hidden in the tag? Just in case someone stumbles on a couple words by accident. :teehee:

Oh okay amazing, I did think there had to be a reason perhaps. The makeup is a little jarring on some of the actors but that one I particular I found very strange ha
