Which is why Gaga got it for being around in the late 00s, 10s, and now 20s? Have any of them even been around for longer than a year or two? Edit: Look at me being wrong again just goes to show how little I actually care about these dumb little awards You're stinky

"MTV is thrilled to give Lady Gaga the first-ever Tricon Award at this year's VMAs, which recognizes a highly accomplished artist across three disciplines. This inaugural award is in recognition of her talents as a global music superstar, award-winning actor and undisputed fashion icon. MTV looks forward to continuing the legacy of recognizing great performers." So it could easily be any one of the girls on that list.

She technically has had a longer and more diverse career than MJ at this point. And she really is the only artist to ever reach the exposure/video catalog Michael did. If anyone has a comparable iconography to MJ, it's Madonna. And to be completely fair, she actually had the first iconic VMA performance ...not Michael. It was the first VMAs when she rolled around touching herself in the wedding dress to Like A Virgin. In all fairness...it actually makes more sense for the award to be named after Madonna because who knows...the VMAs may not have ever become a big thing without her bringing the ratings with that first performance. I don't even think MJ attended the first VMAs. Just saying. Think about it! There’s quite a bit of history there. - Madonna was the first female to get the Vanguard award in 1986; - Before her, the Beatles and Bowie got it in 1984, the first ever recipients; - In 1990 Madonna got the MTV Artist of the Decade Award; - Michael was pressed because of Madonna getting that award, and John Branca, MJ’s lawyer at the time complained to MTV. MTV then to make him happy renamed the award as the MJ Vanguard Video Award, which they now clearly regret. (A petty attitude from MJ but not surprising!) A lot of artists and bands have over the years declared that they don’t recognise the name association with MJ. I would say that if it ever get’s renamed and associated with another artist, it will certainly be with one of the first recipients, and Madonna clearly fits the bill as the first female to ever receive it. I thought they gave her that for being a triple threat and beyond (singer, actress, performer, etc...). Plus it's only been 13 years since she appeared on the scene... If it was 3 decades, it would go to veterans like Mariah and Janet

Absolutely. I think being a diva has been almost a characteristic of all the greatest of that generation. MJ, Madonna, Whitney, Mariah, all had plenty of diva moments across the years. James Gibson 3,489
They tried presenting the vanguard in 2019 without MJ's name but Missy and everybody else kept calling his name during the award. It's too attached and close to the controversy. I loved they created an award for Gaga but it felt too specific to replicate. If it was just icon award it would make more sense. Plus Global Icon was already done at the EMAs so it feels safer to them. Maybe in few years when Michael's name is alright with people (kind is since people moved on from Leaving Neverland) they return with the Vanguard. And Gaga better get it

Oop loved this tea. Never heard of Madonna getting the Artist of the Decade thing. Reminds me of MJ thinking he received the "artist of the millenium" thing when they were just saying happy birthday to him djndjdnd Its curious that the Vanguard was awarded as "lifetime achievement" a few times but they still counted it on the Vanguards list. So why Gaga and Foo Fighters' changed name dont count as well?
