Even when it's warranted, cancel culture is just exhausting. It feels like bullying. Or reverse, Warholian bullying. :vegas:

Again, it's often warranted and I know it's attempting to curb bullying or bad behavior. But it feels petty more often than not.

REALITY

“They we’re old enough to know” ok so how old are you? You just admitted to saying dark offensive stuff around your friends? Is Facebook not used to post to your friends? Especially considering this was a decade ago BEFORE people knew how major social media would be? It doesn’t matter if his profile was public or private, it was a decade ago before social media was the Goliath it is now. We didn’t know the consequences.

I'm not saying that you have to censor yourself 24/7. I do make dark and "offensive" humor sometimes to friends who understand my humor. And they do the same too. But it's because we understand each other and we understand it's a joke. When you put something out on the internet, there's room for misinterpretation and people are allowed to comment on or about your posts. If you want to say offensive stuff in public, then okay, but be prepared for backlash. Besides, have you seen his comments? They're not even dark or "offensive" humor. They're just downright horrible comments. I don't understand how or why anyone would defend them.

I grew up right on the cusp of social media emerging and becoming popular and if I, and many people my age, were taught about the dangers of putting stuff out into the internet and social media, then there's honestly no excuse for anyone else. People born before the advent of social media are old enough to know what's offensive to say in public and what's not. People born after are also already taught about these things too because social media has only grown bigger and more expansive.

This isn't even about "cancel culture" anymore. I actually am not a huge fan of cancel culture. It's just about being a decent person and not being offended that other people are calling out someone for saying offensive stuff. We live in a world now where it's either "OMG! YOU JUST SAID THE MOST OFFENSIVE THING EVER! YOU NEED TO LOSE YOUR JOB AND YOUR WHOLE LIVELIHOOD!" or "OMG! YOU GUYS ARE THE MOST SENSITIVE ASS PEOPLE IN THE WORLD! GET OVER IT! STOP CANCELLING PEOPLE FOR SAYING THINGS THAT ARE OFFENSIVE! FREEDOM OF SPEECH!". Things like this go in by a case-by-case basis and in this case, his comments were legitimately problematic.

I think accountability means acknowledging that what he wrote was downright racist and homophobic. But of course there's no mention of that!:trollga:
